Musicals are a distinctly American art form that rely upon popular song stylings to tell a story. Their appeal transcends age, race, and socioeconomic status, engaging and delighting diverse audiences everywhere. And now you want to put your natural talent as a performer and ability to entertain to use in creating that magic.

A career in music theatre requires a mastery of singing, dancing, and acting. MCC’s intensive Broadway training-styled coursework and emphasis on collaborating as an ensemble will prepare you for a career as an actor, singer, dancer, choreographer, or director of music theatre.

What You’ll Learn

This pathway map will help you gain the expertise needed to:

  • Apply an understanding of intervals, rhythm, and music form to performance. 
  • Use voice and physicality to express the emotion and style of music and text.
  • Apply best practices in singing and speaking to achieve optimal vocal range, breath support, timbre, and pitch/intonation.
  • Create characters convincingly and project one’s self believably in word and action into imaginary circumstances.
  • Apply a general understanding of tap, ballet, hip hop, and jazz to communicate the appropriate emotion within a specific context.
  • Locate and evaluate multiple sources of information to inform performance of musicals and plays from varied historical contexts and genres.
  • Utilize stagecraft knowledge to support overall performance and production.
  • Discern the ethical implications related to copyright laws, revision of source material, and casting.
  • Incorporate cultural awareness and sensitivity into all theatre practices related to instructing, musical selection, casting, rehearsing, marketing, and performance. 
  • Collaborate with a diverse group of individuals to create, perform, rehearse, and instruct.
  • Develop visual, written, and oral communication strategies related to performance and workplace practices.
