The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Beginning Piano Pedagogy program is for pianists who want to teach beginning piano students. Classes offered include learning various methods, techniques, repertoire, skills, style and musicianship necessary to teach piano effectively.

What You’ll Learn

This pathway map will help you gain the expertise needed to:

  1. Apply music notation including pitch, meter, scales, key signatures, intervals, triads, time signatures, and rhythm.
  2. Apply aural skills necessary to hear relationships of intervals, rhythms, melody, and harmony in music.
  3. Analyze, develop and demonstrate techniques for first semester level private piano instruction emphasizing musicianship, literature and performance.
  4. Analyze, practice and perform solo and ensemble piano pieces to enhance performance skills and techniques.
  5. Analyze, compare, and evaluate beginning piano teaching techniques, methods, and repertoire.
  6. Analyze, develop and demonstrate techniques for second semester level private piano instruction emphasizing musicianship, literature and performance.
  7. Analyze, practice, develop and perform sight-reading skills, ensemble playing and accompanying.
  8. Identify the important piano composers and their works and compare characteristics of the different musical eras in relation to piano repertoire studied in class.

Acceptance into the program and permission of Program Director required.

Course Sequence by Term

The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:

  • Students should meet with an academic advisor to develop an individual education plan that meets their academic and career goals. Use the Pathway Planner tool in your Student Center to manage your plan.
  • The course sequence is laid out by suggested term and may be affected when students enter the program at different times of the year.
  • Initial course placement is determined by current district placement measures and/or completion of 100-200 level course and/or program requirements.
  • Degree and transfer seeking students may be required to successfully complete a MCCCD First Year Experience Course (FYE) within the first two semesters at a MCCCD College. Courses include FYE101 and FYE103. Course offerings will vary by college. See an academic, program, or faculty advisor for details.
