Why do I need a test?
The Maricopa Community Colleges are committed to providing students with opportunities for successful academic experiences. As student academic achievement is directly related to beginning in the proper courses, all new students need to complete the placement test.
If you plan on getting a degree, taking a college level English, reading, or math class, or if English is not your first language, you’ll need to take a placement test before you can register for classes.
You can access placement test resources via the buttons above.
The Types of Tests
- The Accuplacer is an untimed, computer-based, adaptive placement test that is designed to identify your skill levels in English, reading, and mathematics in order to best place you in college courses.
- CELSA is paper and pencil test and is used for course placement into the English as a Second Language program for both English and reading.
- The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) helps you receive college credit for what you already know.
These tests are not admissions tests, but rather, a way to determine your best options for reading, English, and math classes.
