National Youth Enrollment Day - Health Insurance Enrollment Event

Dates: 1/19 - 1/21, 2016

Location: MCC Southern & Dobson Campus 

Times: 9 am - 3:00 pm

Event Description: January 21st is National Youth Enrollment Day for Health Insurance, and the Arizona PIRG Education Fund is one of many organizations across the country working to make sure that young adults who are uninsured can get affordable health coverage. We will have enrollment assisters on MCC's campus that day, Thursday the 21st, who can sit down with students for a FREE appointment and walk them through the process of enrolling in an insurance plan. This is a non-profit service, which means the assisters aren't making a dime off of the plans that are chosen. They're really just there to help and to make sure that students can choose a plan that meets their medical and financial needs. 

We need volunteers who can help out during this event, which is on the 21st from 9:00 to 3:00. We also need volunteers who can help to spread the word about the event on the 19th and 20th, from 10:00 to 1:00.

If YOU need health insurance, we can help! You can sign up for a free appointment with an enrollment assister by going to coveraz.org/connector and entering the zip code 85202, or by calling the campaign organizer for this event, Tim Barthelmes, at (814)449-0716. Most individuals making less than $16,000 each year can qualify for AHCCCS, which means free coverage, and most individuals making more than that but less than $40,000 each year can qualify for financial assistance through the Health Insurance Marketplace. ACT NOW! If you don't qualify for AHCCCS, the last day to enroll in a plan through the Marketplace is January 31st. Now's your chance to get help!

Volunteer Duties: Volunteers on 1/19 and 1/20 would be trained on how to reach out to students at the table and let them know about the opportunity to get help with enrolling in health insurance. They will also know how to sign people up for appointments on the spot. This is for any volunteers available for at least one hour between 10:00 and 1:00 on either of those days.

For the day of the event, the main responsibilities would be checking people in for their appointments and asking them a few questions about how they heard about us, why they decided to sign up for an appointment, etc. This is for any volunteers available on 1/21 for at least one hour between 9:00 and 3:00.

MAG 2016 Point-In-Time Homeless Count

Dates: 1/26/16

Location: City of Mesa

Times: 6:00 am - 12:00 pm (Training session required - see Volunteer Description/Details)

Event Description: The MAG 2016 Point-In-Time Homeless Count is a one-day street count to determine the number of people experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County during a given point in time. The count includes a brief survey to identify some of the characteristics of people experiencing homelessness in our community. Cities, such as Mesa, that receive federal funding for homeless assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are required to conduct an annual comprehensive count. This helps local governments and nonprofit organizations more effectively allocate resources necessary to meet the needs of the homeless population.

Volunteer Duties: Volunteers will be deployed in groups of two or three to count and interview homeless individuals and their families in various parts of Mesa. The volunteers will be required to attend a volunteer training session prior to the count. The training session will be held Thursday, Jan. 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Fire Station 201, 360 E. 1st St. All survey volunteers must be 18 or older.

Garden, Education & Youth Oh My!

Dates: 2/4/16 (and every Thursday until 5/5/2016)

Location: Gilbert Boys & Girls Club

Times: 3:30 - 5:30 pm

Event Description: Desert Willow Environmental Education Center has partnered-up with the Gilbert Boys and Girls Club to collaborate on a Garden Project that will help youth make healthier food choices. This project will educate youth in nutrition literacy in order to help them understand what it takes to eat healthy and make wise food choices. This project will also introduce a vertical aeroponic growing system called a Tower Garden, which will combine science, nature and nutrition into gardening fun! Plan on getting your hands dirty!

Volunteer Duties: Experience in gardening is not required!! Volunteers will help assist with this project by teaching youth the basics in soil and water chemistry (lessons provided by Desert Willow), tower garden construction, fruit and vegetable seedlings, and the importance of eating healthy and living a nutritious life. Volunteers must have a vehicle to get to and from Gilbert Boys and Girls Club. There will be plenty of time to look over lessons before teaching students in the program. Lessons will only be 15 to 20 minutes max, and will go over the very basics of water and soil science.

Waste Management Phoenix Open

Three Sisters

Location: MCC Theatre

Event Description: Three Sister is a drama production being hosted in the MCC Theatre by the Theatre & Film Arts Department. This performance will include students and community member actors. 
Performance dates are: March 4, 5, 10, 11 at 7:30 pm (seating for the production will begin at 7 pm) and March 5 and 12 at 2 pm (seating for this production begins at1:30 pm). 

We are in need of Volunteer Ushers for the performances. Please wear slack (black preferred) and a nice shirt, NO jeans or t-shirts allowed.

Mesa District Pinewood Derby

Dates: 4/23/16

Location: Interstake Building off of Horne and Main in Mesa

Times: 8:30 - 1:30 pm

Event Description: We are doing a Mesa District Pinewood Derby for Cub Scouts and an Olympic Carnival. The Pinewood Derby will be in the building and the Carnival will be outside. We have 8 sporting events for the kids to do. We need 2 volunteers to run each event and help us keep track of scores. All the supplies, prizes and event stuff will be provided.

Volunteer Duties: As a volunteer you can help us set up each of the carnival booths and run them. They are very easy to run. We are doing events that are very simple like long jump, ball toss, noodle javelin throw. Each volunteer should have not problem running each booth. Everything will be provided we just need help with crowd control and making sure the booths run smooth. It's really fun!

Celebration of Feedom

Dates: July 4, 2015

Location: Mesa Convention Center

Event Description: Volunteers are needed for the Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom for a variety of activities including stage assistance, event tear down, VIP Area and more. You can volunteer for a chance to win gift cards, goodies, or the Grand Prize of a 4th Generation iPod Touch!

This is not just another fireworks show, but a celebration of America’s freedom and independence culminating with a spectacular pyrotechnic show and salute to America. This will be an event to remember and we hope you can be a part of it! 

Shifts are 2-4 hours long on Saturday, July 4th. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or 14 if accompanied by a parent or guardian. 

Please Note: 
•Volunteer work is predominately conducted outdoors and is subject to inclement weather.
•Exposure to large crowds at events is likely.

Volunteer Description: Volunteer Registration and Check In 
Volunteers will manage check-in table and provide direction and information to other volunteers as required.

Sierra Ancha Trail Maintenance

Dates: 8/29/2015

Location: Tonto National Forest (near Young, AZ)

Times: 6:30am - 4:00pm

Event Description: This is a trail maintenance project in one of our wonderful wilderness areas, the Sierra Ancha Wilderness. Because it is in wilderness, only hand tools can be used. It's a beautiful area -- and much cooler than Phoenix!

Astronomy Nights

Event Description: Astronomy Night is a campus event where students and the community can come and watch a 30-minute planetarium show with activities and astronomy viewing.

MCC Rose Garden Fall Pruning

Event Description: Fall Pruning involves pruning the 9000 rose bushes back by 1/3 so they can recover from the stress of summer and provide another bloom for Thanksgiving and Christmas. There is a break for refreshments at 8:30 AM.

It's a Challah Day

Special Olympics Bocce Competition

Event Description: MCC is hosting the Four Peaks Area Bocce competition. Special Olympics athletes from the East Valley will be on campus to compete it this state competition qualifying event. Come out and be a part of the fun.

Volunteer Duties: Volunteers will run individual bocce courts, acting as timers, scorekeepers, officials and awards presenters. Prior knowledge of the game is not required. Training will be provided and we will be hosting a training/field day on campus on 9/30/2015 to get everyone familiar with the game.

Chasing the White Rabbit, Alice tumbles down the rabbit hole into Wonderland, where she meets all its famous residents: the King of Hearts, the Red Queen, the Dormouse, Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Caterpillar and other fantastical characters designed to captivate the young of heart, regardless of age.

NAMI Valley Walk 2015

Location: 17th Avenue and Jefferson

Times: 5am - 2:30pm

Event Description: NAMI Valley Walk is annual event to bring awareness to the community, people living with mental illness, and their families that no one is alone in this daily walk. We gather as one big family to share, learn and obtain the most current resources available in the community. We have a 5K walk, providers of services are present, and do fun stuff.

Volunteer Duties: Volunteer are extremely important since we save thousands of dollars by using volunteers to set up our 10 x 10 pop up tents and sides, tables, chairs, etc., We need set up crew at 5:30 a.m. and take down crew at 1:00 p.m. 
We need people who will help us keep our trash under control by emptying the bins and placing the bags in our trash truck. We need volunteers to cheer on our walkers, we need volunteers for check in and many other duties.

Event Description: Paul Horton, Meteorologist of KPHO CBS 5's Evening News, will broadcast live from Desert Ridge Marketplace from Monday, October 19th to Friday, October 23rd. Each day Paul will wash hundreds of cars with help from surrounding businesses and agency volunteers. All proceeds from this event will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona.

Pumpkin Festival

The Secret Garden, the Musical

Lego Club

Event Description: Mesa Community College's Center for Community & Civic Engagement and Service Learning & Honors at Red Mountain have partnered with the Autism Society of Greater Phoenix to support children with autism and families within our community. We provide the Lego's and a movie and you provide the kids. The whole family is welcome and our meetings are FREE!

Our Lego Drive went really, really well and so we have lots of new Legos to play with!

Special Olympics Arizona invites you to form a team of 12 people to be paired with Special Olympics athletes for sports and games for all abilities!  This unique competition brings together Special Olympics Athletes and the community to compete together in old school Field Day activities, including Track Relays, Bean Bag Toss, Flag Football and Bocce Ball.

Special Olympics Arizona Unified Field Day pairs individuals with and without intellectual disabilities to compete together on the same team. The event gives individuals the opportunity to have an interactive experience with Special Olympics Arizona athletes in a fun, safe and competitive environment. Individuals are divided into teams and paired with Special Olympics Athletes to compete against each other for some friendly team building competition. The benefits of Unified Field Day are endless for both the Special Olympics athletes and their teammates without a disability. It allows Special Olympics athletes to gain higher-level sports skills while experiencing meaningful inclusion by playing a valued role on a team. This event changes people’s attitudes about people with disabilities and fosters lasting friendships.

Health Insurance 101 Week

Event Description: A health insurance education blitz to let students know about their options and rights, and to schedule them for appointments with enrollment assisters. We want to make sure all students at MCC are informed when it comes to health insurance, and can get the coverage they need. This event is organized by Arizona PIRG Education Fund, a non-profit consumer advocacy organization, along with ASMCC.

Volunteer Duties: Tabling to let students know about their health insurance options and rights. Scheduling students for appointments with enrollment assisters. Assisting in classroom presentations.

International Culture Fair

Volunteer Duties: I will have a training on December 1st at 3:00pm. If you want to attend this short training, please do. Those who can commit to serve from1:00pm to 3:00pm, please plan to attend this as I may have you staff the closing of auction tables.

Help is needed the day before for setup. Volunteers who help setup are the only ones who get to preview the items. No items can be purchased until the sale starts.

Duties may include: Setup, organization. watching sale and auction items, assisting the cashier, making sure the room is picked up and everything is correctly labeled, and cleanup. This is the best event ever and the volunteers have a great time!

Soccer for Success Coaches Needed

Event Description: Boys & Girls Club is currently looking for volunteer soccer coaches for our upcoming 2015-2016 Soccer for Success Program.

Soccer for Success is the U.S. Soccer Foundation's innovative youth development program that uses soccer as a tool to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles for children in low-income communities.

All games and practices run 3x a week after 4pm at Boys & Girls Club locations around the valley.

Astronomy Nights

Event Description: -Performance dates: Dec. 4, 5, 10 and 11th at 7:30 pm, and Dec. 5 and 12 at 2 pm
-For evening performances the shows starts at 7:30 pm but seating is at 7 pm. Volunteer usher call time is 6:40 pm that way you can sign, in get a small tour if needed, get your name tag and assignment. 
-For matinee performances, the show starts at 2 pm and seating is at 1:30 pm. Volunteer usher call time is1:15 pm. 
-Please wear slacks and a nice top, or a nice top and skirt to usher. No jeans and T-shirts.

Volunteer Duties: The primary function of the ushers/ticket taker is to provide a high level of customer service. Duties of volunteers include: 
Greet and direct the public inside the facility
Take tickets at auditorium entrances.
Hand out programs
Escort patron to their seats
Answer questions about the facility and event

Lego Club

Event Description: Mesa Community College's Center for Community & Civic Engagement and Service Learning & Honors at Red Mountain have partnered with the Autism Society of Greater Phoenix to support children with autism and families within our community. We provide the Lego's and a movie and you provide the kids. The whole family is welcome and our meetings are FREE!

Our Lego Drive went really, really well and so we have lots of new Legos to play with!

Volunteer Duties: Volunteers are needed to help set-up, run and clean-up Lego Club meetings. We also need volunteers to help the children build with Legos.

Jingle Mingle

Event Description: Voices for CASA Children is excited to host our annual Jingle Mingle on December 11, 2015. This CASA appreciation event is one of a kind; thanks to the generosity of the community, this event will host a “Toy Shoppe” with thousands of toys, blankets and food baskets, to be delivered to the vulnerable youth we serve. We expect about 300 CASAs and guests to gather at the Shriner’s in Phoenix for this wonderful event.

Voices for CASA Children is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing a voice to every abused and neglected child in state care by providing resources to grow the CASA of Maricopa County program. CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge and empowered to speak for and represent an abused or neglected child in court proceedings. They are an active, consistent participant in the child’s case management team. Please see our website www.voicesforcasachildren.org for more information.

Currently, there are over 17,000 children in the Arizona foster care system. The most vulnerable children in Maricopa County lack an important voice in the child welfare system: a CASA.

Volunteer Duties: We need volunteers for the following tasks during the event:

Junior Achievement Open 4 Business Golf Tournament

Event Description: The JA Open 4 Business is the Valley's premiere non-profit amateur golf tournament. Nearly 300 top executives from leading companies in Arizona join us in there desire to make a true impact on the lives of Arizona's children. More than 11,500 children throughout the Valley will benefit directly from the tournament's proceeds and will have the chance to participate in JA's financial literacy and work-readiness programming.
