In compliance with the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) a college/university is prohibited from providing certain information from your student records to a third party, such as information on grades, billing, tuition and fee assessments, financial aid (including scholarships, grants, work – study, or loan amounts), and other student record information. This restriction applies, but is not limited to your parents, your spouse, or a sponsor.

Students can now authorize third parties (such as parents, guardians, spouses, or others) to access specific student information in their Student Center. Once the student has authorized the third party in the Student Center, they can share their FERPA PIN with the authorized third party to receive student account information from a Maricopa staff member.

Oral permission to disclose protected information does not meet the consent requirement under FERPA. Students cannot give verbal consent when a parent/guardian (or other people) is with them, and they are asking college departments (A&R, Financial Aid, etc.) for information that comes from their education records (registration, grades, financial aid, etc.).

Under the FERPA regulations, we must always use a FERPA PIN created by the student.
