Student Responsibilities for Tutoring
Welcome to tutoring! Students must be currently enrolled in the MCC course(s) for which they are requesting tutoring. Tutors cannot help with preparation for assessment or placement tests.
To ensure that you get the most out of your sessions, please review and follow these guidelines:
CHECK IN
- Log in and out using the tracking system for each session.
- Upon arrival, briefly summarize the help you need so the tutor can focus on your specific needs.
BE PREPARED
- Attend class regularly, watch assigned videos, complete reading assignments, and attempt your work before each session.
- Bring questions or areas of difficulty to discuss with your tutor.
- Bring all necessary materials (e.g., books, assignments, rubrics, notes, calculators) to each session, whether in-person or virtual.
RESPECT TUTOR'S TIME AND ROTATION
- We encourage you to use your tutoring time efficiently. Since tutors assist multiple students during each session, please be prepared to work independently between check-ins. While tutors are happy to help, extended one-on-one time may not always be possible.
ENGAGE ACTIVELY IN THE LEARNING PROCESS
- Participate fully by attempting problems, taking notes, asking questions, and engaging in discussions.
- For virtual sessions, use the ConexED platform to stay connected and engaged throughout the session.
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR SUCCESS
- Tutors are here to help you understand the material and develop skills, but the responsibility of the accuracy and completion of your assignments rest with you.
- Tutors are not teachers and are not responsible for re-lecturing, summarizing textbooks, or providing answers to assignments, tests, or quizzes. Do not ask tutors to assist with test or quiz questions.
RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
- Treat tutors, staff, and fellow students with respect and courtesy at all times, both in-person and online.
- Use respectful communication, and avoid using foul language. Disruptive behavior, including inappropriate language or actions, will not be tolerated.
- Your conduct should contribute to a positive and productive learning environment, in alignment with the MCCD Student Conduct Code, Administrative Regulation 2.5.1.
- Be mindful of others in the tutoring area by keeping noise to a minimum and not interfering with others' concentration.
- Maintain a positive and productive environment for everyone.
GIFTS AND COMPENSATION
- Tutors cannot accept tips or any form of compensation.
- Tutors may accept perishable food items (e.g., fruit baskets, candy) with a total value of up to $50 per fiscal year, as long as the items are shared within the department and not for personal use per MCCD Administrative Regulation 1.18.
RESPECT THE TUTOR’S PERSONAL TIME
- Tutors are available only during scheduled work hours and tutoring is not conducted via email.
- Do not ask for or share personal contact information (e.g., phone numbers, personal email addresses). Keep all interactions with your tutor professional and focused on academics.
REPORTING INCIDENTS AND CONCERNS
If you experience or witness any form of harassment, mistreatment, or inappropriate behavior, report it immediately to your tutor or tutor supervisor. Reporting helps maintain a safe and respectful learning environment for everyone in our tutoring centers.
Thank you for following these guidelines and making the most out of your tutoring experience!
