Desert Echoes Flute Project
The Desert Echoes Flute Project is an exciting and adventurous flute choir program that includes two large flute choirs and a small chamber flute choir. Arizona’s premiere flute ensemble organization includes professionals, music educators, college students, community musicians, and high school flutists who all enjoy playing the flute. The original ensemble is the flute choir or orchestra (the terms are used interchangeably) that is known as DEFproject. It was founded in 2006 by artistic director Christina Steffen and has become a nationally recognized flute choir that has been invited to perform at the National Flute Association Conventions (2007, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2019), The San Francisco International Flute Festival, the renowned Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, and the International Low Flutes Festival.
The small DEF Chamber Choir began in the fall of 2011 and performs as a true chamber ensemble without a conductor. Members of both these groups are selected through an audition process.
The DEF Community Flute Choir was established in 2016 and brings together flutists of varying levels (from high school through professional) without audition to enjoy playing music together. The ensembles present concerts throughout the year, have collaborated with other organizations for concerts, provided community service programs, and sponsored educational programs.
