TRIO Peer Coach - TRIO Student Support Services (multiple)

Office Hours of Operation: Monday-Thursday 8:00am to 6:00pm; Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm

Job Summary:
TRIO SSS Peer Coaches will play a critical role in student engagement and success for participants in the TRIO Student Support Services Programs (SSS). Peer Coaches are upper division students at MCC or MCC alumni who have successfully navigated their educational journey. Peer coaches are passionate about helping current MCC students develop the skills necessary to become successful students. Coaches will work with TRIO participants to overcome the academic and social barriers to academic success. by developing meaningful and healthy connections with participants. Peer Coaches also collaborate with faculty, staff, and participants to reinforce the mission and goals of TRIO SSS.

Essential Functions:

  • Providing virtual/in-person services to program participants through one-on-one meetings, workshops, outreach activities, and/or other programming
  • Co-facilitating student groups and/or workshops to support student engagement, learning, and development
  • Leading and/or assisting full time staff with student events, projects
  • Creating healthy and productive student relationships and providing student-centered customer service by helping participants
  • Orienting students to Mesa Community College and its resources by providing correct referrals to service areas and/or resources
  • Maintaining accurate and up to date documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants have a 2.75 GPA or higher if enrolled at a postsecondary institution If not currently enrolled can demonstrate past academic performance
  • Be in good academic standing overall at their postsecondary institution
  • Have completed at least 18 credits at a postsecondary institution
  • Be enrolled or have attended Mesa Community College
  • Have experience working with first-generation, low-income students, students who have experienced foster care, and/or students with disabilities or themselves come from these backgrounds

Desired Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher if enrolled at a postsecondary institution
  • If not currently enrolled can demonstrate past academic performance
  • Have completed a certificate or degree from Mesa Community College and/or transferred to a 4-year institution
  • Have extensive experience working with first-generation, low-income students, students who have experienced foster care and/or students with disabilities or themselves come from these backgrounds
  • Have experience working with a federal TRiO Program

Special Working Conditions:

Job Summary:
TRiO SSS Academic Tutors will help build positive learning communities for TRiO SSS participants, create meaningful connections with participants and staff, and support participant academic success to reinforce the mission and goals of TRiO SSS. TRiO SSS Academic Tutors will provide individual and group tutoring in specific subject areas, to SSS participants, to supplement services provided on campus. We are currently in need of tutors for English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Applicants will be agreeable to providing tutoring services within a flexible time schedule (nights, weekends), in a variety of locations (on campus and off campus), and in different modalities (in person and virtual).

Essential Functions:

  • Help participants identify academic problem areas
  • Provide academic assistance in specific subject areas
  • Help participants develop effective learning strategies appropriate to our population and their diverse learning styles
  • Facilitate independent learning by helping SSS participants discover their own answers and insights
  • Maintaining accurate documentation

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants have a 3.0 GPA or higher in the subject area courses related to tutoring specialty (English/Math/Sciences)
  • Be in good academic standing overall at MCC
  • Have completed at least 18 credits within the MCCCD
  • Have experience working with first-generation, low-income students, students who have experienced foster care, and/or students with disabilities or themselves come from these backgrounds

Desired Qualifications:

  • Applicants have a 3.5 GPA or higher in subject area courses related to tutoring specialty (English/Math/Sciences)
  • Have completed 36 credits or more within the MCCCD; each semester in good academic standing
  • Have experience working with a federal TRIO program or are an alumni of a federal TRiO program Verifiable tutoring experience

Job Summary:
Administers a variety of paper and computer-based exams to students/community members and related testing duties. Provides general clerical assistance, including answering phones, greeting/directing student and customer traffic at Red Mountain MCC testing location.

Essential Functions:

  • Administer a variety of online exams to Mesa Community College students including placement exams, credit by examination, and degree specific exams
  • Advises students of testing schedules and procedures
  • Provides general clerical assistance including typing, filing, answering phones, and processing incoming/outgoing mail

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working with computers to include databases and spreadsheets, and a willingness to learn other software applications
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience establishing and maintaining accurate records
  • Experience following written and oral directions
  • Experience maintaining highly confidential materials
  • Experience providing effective and courteous customer service
  • Experience establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with diverse backgrounds and cultures

Desired Qualifications:

  • Speaking Spanish is a plus

THOR the Mascot - Institutional Advancement

Status: Temporary / Part-Time Employee

Department: Institutional Advancement

Job Summary: The Mesa Community College mascot, Thor the Thunderbird, represents soaring power, strength and fun. Thor’s role is to exemplify Thunderbird spirit by encouraging enthusiasm, athletic excitement and MCC pride, while representing the college at sporting, community and college activities. Thor energizes events by interacting with fans and participants. As Thor, you receive $50 per appearance and demonstrate your abilities to entertain, interact with individuals and crowds, while exhibiting professionalism, following instructions, showing initiative and participating with reliability in scheduled events. Tryouts for Thor for the 2021-2022 school year will be held in September and October, times and location to be determined. Qualifications:

  • Current MCC student or registered for Fall 2022 taking a minimum of 6 credits
  • In good physical condition

  • Able to work in the confined headgear and clothing of the mascot outfit
  • A height of 5’7” to 6’3” (to see out of costume)
  • Sign the Thor Pledge and adhere to all requirements set forth in it
