Lena Nape came to Mesa Community College seeking a fresh start—an opportunity to redefine her goals and build a strong foundation for the future. What she found was a supportive community that encouraged her to grow, take risks and believe in her potential.
After graduation, Nape will transfer to Arizona State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with an emphasis in painting, along with a minor in entrepreneurship. She plans to showcase her work in exhibitions while building a career as a freelance artist and baker.
During her time at MCC, Nape was deeply involved on campus, most notably serving as president of Phi Theta Kappa. In this role, she helped lead sustainability projects from concept to execution, collaborating with the Center for Civic Engagement, Entrepreneurship Club, Art Club and other campus partners. Through these efforts, she completed more than 300 hours of community service and graduated with highest distinction through the honors program.
Her journey included overcoming personal challenges by stepping outside her comfort zone and learning to advocate for herself.
“I learned to take initiative, speak up for myself and connect with people who could help me get things done,” Nape said. “I kept working to grow as a leader so I could represent my community.”
Nape credits MCC’s people and opportunities for connection as some of the most meaningful parts of her experience.
“I especially appreciated how MCC supports the arts, with frequent exhibitions and opportunities for students to display their work,” she said. “The way professors treat students as equals made a lasting impact on me.”
As she looks ahead, Nape encourages students to take initiative and make the most of their college experience.
“Be the change you hope to see in the world,” she said.
With plans to continue her education and creative pursuits, Nape carries forward the confidence, leadership and determination she developed at MCC.
