Jade Boheneck, 25, has always loved dental hygiene and plans to obtain her dental hygiene license with the knowledge she’s learned from Mesa Community College. She plans to graduate with an associate degree in dental hygiene from MCC in May 2026.
During the course of her education, her brother was diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma that spread to his brain and spine.
“Balancing my academic responsibilities while supporting my brother and family has been incredibly challenging,” said Boheneck, whose family lives in Mesa and Gilbert. “I have done my best to be present for him—spending mornings at the hospital studying by his side, then rushing to campus to take exams and prepare for evening clinic sessions that run until 9 p.m. It has required emotional strength and determination I did not know I had.”
Boheneck said recently, her brother was admitted to the hospital with severe leg pain. Scans revealed that the cancer had continued to spread into his femur.
“After careful evaluation, his medical team informed us that there were no remaining treatment options, as the therapies were no longer effective. Treatment was discontinued, and he was placed on hospice care to manage his pain and provide comfort during this transition to heaven.”
Boheneck said she has been spending every possible moment with her brother and leaning on her family for support.
“At the same time, I remain committed to showing up fully for my education—prepared for exams, quizzes, assignments, projects, and patient care in the clinic,” she said. “Continuing to pursue my education has provided both structure and purpose during an incredibly difficult time.”
Boheneck said MCC residential faculty member Dawn Brause has been a constant source of support throughout this journey.
“I have felt comfortable confiding in her, and she has shown tremendous understanding by offering flexibility when needed,” Boheneck said. “I have chosen to stay engaged in my coursework, as focusing on my studies has been a meaningful distraction and a reminder of the career I have worked toward for the past six years.”
