Business finance graduate Joseph Rodriguez Gonzalez, 20, of Mesa, is a first-generation college graduate who was recruited to attend Mesa Community College by a soccer coach who observed Rodriguez playing high school soccer.

“MCC was close to home and had an affordable price,” said Rodriguez, who will graduate with an Associate in Business and an Arizona General Education Curriculum certificate this month. “I discovered the college had a great atmosphere and good vibes. Everyone is happy and welcoming.”

MCC professor and faculty chair Paul Harasha said Rodriguez is an A student in his SOC101 sociology class.

“He is awesome,” Harasha said. “He was the Mesa Scholar of the Year last semester and a volunteer soccer coach at Mountain View High School in Mesa.”

Rodriguez said he has committed to play soccer next year at Lubbock Christian University in Texas, where he will earn a bachelor’s degree.

Rodriguez overcame several personal obstacles to complete his associate’s degree. In addition to his studies, he has also worked at MCC since October 2024.

“I had problems with time management, plus balancing work, school, family and soccer,” he said. “I spoke with a friend for tips, and my coaches and teachers gave me advice. They shared information on time management and scheduling.”

Rodriguez said these skills will help him in his future occupation. He plans to work in bank investing or financial management.

“This information will prepare me mentally,” he said. “It will be work, but getting more experience and planning ahead will benefit me in the future.”
