Join us for Mesa Community College's Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Awareness Week, happening from April 29th to May 3rd, 2024!

This crucial week is a collaborative effort between MCC's American Indian Institute, Miss Native MCC, and the Inter-Tribal Student Organization. Together, we're dedicated to shedding light on the alarming rates at which Native American Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, and Peoples are affected by violence in communities across the nation.

Did you know Indigenous Women (Girls +) are murdered at rates 10 times higher than all ethnicities, making murder the 3rd leading cause of death among Indigenous women? As a community college deeply committed to Indigenous communities, it's imperative that we advocate for and educate ourselves on issues directly impacting our students' backgrounds.

Here's what you can expect during our awareness week:

April 29: Handprint and Prayer Tie Day- Hosted by Miss Native MCC Royalty Court

• Join us as we assemble red handprints in the Student Lounge with supportive messages for victims, survivors, and families.
• Help create prayer ties with tobacco, tied with good intentions and prayers for all affected by this epidemic. These prayer ties will be offered back to the earth at the end of the week.

April 30: Library Display and Interactive Learning- Hosted by Inter-Tribal Student Organization

• Explore the library display featuring a QR code that will interactively guide you to learn more about this critical issue using campus resources.

May 1: Awareness Walk and Generational Healing Workshop- Hosted by Miss Native MCC Royalty Court & American Indian Institute

• Join our awareness walk starting at 11am at the clock tower, followed by the Generational Healing Workshop in LB300. Bring photos of loved ones and supportive signs.

May 2: Red Dress Day

• Wear red to show your solidarity with Indigenous communities facing issues related to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples.

May 5: National Day of Awareness

• The White House has officially designated May 5th as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Inidgenous Women and Girls. Let's stand together to honor and remember those we've lost.- Please research an event near you to continue to be an ally in this issue.
