Risk Management

MCCCD Governing Board approved an initiative to embed ongoing risk assessment and management into our daily operations and culture. This initiative is called the Maricopa Integrated Risk Assessment (MIRA) project and it extends beyond traditional risk management to embrace a wider view of risk management called Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). ERM is a process and management tool to address all sources of risk that would threaten our strategic objectives. Using the MIRA tool, we look at (1) the probability of the risk occurring and (2) the impact the risk would have if it occurred in the following risk areas...

  • Physical Injury
  • Property Damage
  • College Reputation
  • Accessibility

Not all events rise to the level of needing a MIRA. To streamline the risk assessment process at Mesa Community College we created a Risk Assessment Screening Tool that reviews the event for the following key risk indicators...

  • What is the expected size of the event?
  • What time will it occur?
  • Are vendors participating?
  • Will there be sensitive subject matters?
  • Will there be special parking needs?
  • Are there physical activities that could result in injury?
  • Will MCCCD COVID protections be in place?

If any of the above indicators are flagged, then our Risk Screening Committee assesses the event risk. If multiple indicators are flagged, then a MIRA is completed. MCC Risk Screening Committee includes representation from the following key areas…

  • College Police
  • Student Life
  • Maintenance & Operations
  • Institutional Advancement
  • Risk & Resource Management
