The MCC Planetarium is excited to welcome alumni and the community back for its second Summer Laser Light Show Series, transforming the dome into an unforgettable experience where music meets science in a dazzling display of color, sound and immersive visuals. Inside the 52-foot dome, high-powered laser effects are synchronized to iconic songs spanning generations - from classic rock legends to today's chart-topping artists.
"Planetariums and laser shows are like peanut butter and jelly - they just work together," said MCC Planetarium Coordinator and alumnus James Enos. "Laser shows have been a part of planetarium culture since the 1970s and highlight the versatility of a space like this - it's not just an astronomical education facility. It's a theatre for culture to be shared."
The planetarium has long been a hub for discovery since opening in August 2008 as part of the Physical Science Building at MCC's Southern and Dobson Campus. In 2018, the projection system was updated. Today, the 52-seat planetarium serves not only astronomy students, but also approximately 5,000 - 6,000 visitors each year, including school groups, families and community organizations.
"These shows have something for everyone, for all ages - a little classic, a little new and all good vibes and times," said Enos.
Friday night shows deliver a powerful, immersive experience with music from the '80s, '90s and shows such as "Stranger Things." Other performances are set to music from artists like Taylor Swift, Queen, Pink Floyd, Metallica and The Weeknd.
Weekday afternoon shows such as "Lasers for Littles," "The Great Space Chase" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" are great for kids and families, making them a perfect introduction to the planetarium experience.
"When a child comes in here and asks me, the closest thing they've ever encountered to an expert, a profound thought-provoking question about astronomy ... there's nothing like it," Enos said. "I'm trying to inspire the next generation of astronomers, scientists, astronauts and engineers."
Summer shows are June 2-July 31. Dates and times vary. For show schedules, descriptions and ticket information, visit mesacc.edu/planetarium.
