Erin Rawson was a Mesa Community College faculty member in the Department of Communication/Theatre and Film Arts from 1995-2025. During her 30 years in the classroom, her leadership, passion, and mission as an educator helped to equip students with the communication skills needed to be successful in their personal and professional lives and in the communities in which they live. Erin served in many capacities, ultimately instilling in her students the belief that success in academics can be a great internal reward.
Her extensive involvement in both departmental and college-wide initiatives reflects a profound dedication not only to student success but also to the advancement of faculty and institutional goals. Erin played a critical role in shaping academic policy, participating in shared governance, and voicing the concerns and interests of faculty and students alike.
Her tenure as the Director of Speech Activities marked a period of remarkable growth and visibility for the college’s Speech and Debate program. As coach of the MCC Speech and Debate team, she trained students in the art of rhetoric, argumentation, and performance and mentored students to become articulate, confident leaders.
As Faculty Professional Growth Representative, Erin contributed significantly to faculty development. Her leadership helped ensure that MCC faculty were supported in their scholarly pursuits and career progression, which in turn enriched the academic life of the college as a whole.
One of her most personally and professionally significant roles was her service as Department Chair. Taking the helm during the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Erin exhibited remarkable adaptability, empathy, and vision. She guided the department by helping faculty pivot to online learning, addressing student retention concerns, and maintaining a sense of connection and morale within the department. Her service work reflects a core belief that education is not only about teaching, but about lifting others, creating community, and contributing wherever one can make a difference.
