Field of Interest: Culture and Society

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Public Relations combines coursework in the related fields of journalism, mass communication, and business. Provides students with general, practical, and marketable skills that will enable them to seek entry-level employment in public relations, such as media relations, community or consumer relations, marketing research, in-house publications, political campaigns, fundraising and volunteer recruitment.

What You’ll Learn

This pathway map will help you gain the expertise needed to:

  1. Explain the functions of various media platforms.
  2. Use word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
  3. Identify media functions and the impact on audiences.
  4. Develop a public relations campaign that aligns with organizational goals.
  5. Produce strategic messages to successfully engage diverse audiences using a variety of platforms.
  6. Apply various journalism and public relations writing styles including Associated Press (AP) style.
  7. Demonstrate a command of language, appropriate word choices, and proper grammar to create or modify relevant content and messages.
  8. Analyze the interrelationships between Communication, Journalism and Business.
  9. Differentiate Public Relations from other marketing approaches.
  10. Create strategies and messages that align with an organization’s diversity, ethics and social responsibility standards.
  11. Apply crisis communication best practices.
  12. Apply relevant knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to seek career opportunities in the field.

Course Sequence by Term

The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:

  • Students should meet with an academic advisor to develop an individual education plan that meets their academic and career goals. Use the Pathway Planner tool in your Student Center to manage your plan.
  • The course sequence is laid out by suggested term and may be affected when students enter the program at different times of the year.
  • Initial course placement is determined by current district placement measures and/or completion of 100-200 level course and/or program requirements.
  • Degree and transfer seeking students may be required to successfully complete a MCCCD First Year Experience Course (FYE) within the first two semesters at a MCCCD College. Courses include FYE101 and FYE103. Course offerings will vary by college. See an academic, program, or faculty advisor for details.
  • Consult with your faculty mentor or academic advisor to determine educational requirements, including possible university transfer options, for your chosen career field.
