MESA, Ariz. – Dec. 3, 2018 – Mesa Community College received a $10,000 grant from the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Grant Program to encourage low-income, underrepresented groups of students to pursue degrees and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The Exploring STEM Degrees and Careers project provides opportunities for students to learn through interactions with STEM faculty, peers and professionals in the community; bolstering participants' critical networks for success at college and in their careers.
The project includes a series of workshops, campus tours and community forums for college students, high school students, junior high school students and their family members.
Faculty and staff from MCC STEM-related departments such as life science, physical science, mathematics, business and information systems, as well as the college’s student success programs, will collaboratively develop workshop curriculum and instructional materials. Community partners, such as Boeing, Apple, and TGen, will be invited to support the project and provide guest speakers for community forums.
MCC academic advisors located at each high school within the Mesa Public Schools system will engage high school students in the project. The proposed project will serve approximately 1,000 participants, including students, parents, teachers and community members. This project meets Fort McDowell’s funding priorities by addressing the community’s educational attainment and workforce development needs.
