2017 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Scholars

MESA, Arizona -- April 3, 2017 -- Mesa Community College students Jessica Siegel and Zachary St. Martin have been named 2017 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Scholars.

Jessica Siegel Jessica Siegel The Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, recognizes high achieving, two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society.

Siegel, selected as a $1,500 Gold Scholarship recipient, plans to earn a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Arizona State University and to study medicine at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, paving the way to become a naturopathic medical doctor.

Zachary St. MartinZachary St. Martin St. Martin, selected as a $1,250 Silver Scholarship recipient, plans to major in the science of healthcare delivery at Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions with the intention of pursuing joint Doctor of Medicine/Master of Public Health degrees, preparing himself for a life of service as a physician-champion for medically underserved populations.

"These exceptional members of the Omicron Beta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society epitomize the four hallmarks Phi Theta Kappa is founded on: scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship,” said Duane Oakes, advisor and faculty director of the MCC Center for Community and Civic Engagement. “We are proud of the civic leaders these two have become and know that they will make a difference in the world.”

PTK administers the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Program. Student scholars receive local, state and national recognition at the honor society’s annual convention, being held April 6-8, in Nashville, Tennessee.

High-achieving students are nominated for the award by campus administrators. In the selection process, an independent panel of judges considers academic achievement, leadership and engagement in college and community service.
