From a young age, Mesa Community College graduate Priscilla Gutierrez has felt deeply connected to the Mesa community. “Having been born and raised here, I saw MCC as the ideal place to begin my educational journey.”
Gutierrez has remained true to her roots. She continues to reside in Mesa and serves as the Mesa City Council District Coordinator supporting District 4 Councilmember Jenn Duff.
Attending MCC for a brief time following high school graduation in 2005, she returned in 2016 as an online student to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree with emphasis in business, an Associate of Arts degree, and a General Education certificate. She transferred to Northern Arizona University (NAU) where she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with emphasis in public administration. Shortly after graduation, Gutierrez was promoted to her present position with the City of Mesa.
“Looking back, returning to MCC was one of the best decisions I ever made,” Gutierrez said. “MCC provides the support, resources, and flexibility to help students succeed, no matter their stage in life.”
Continuing her education at MCC played a significant role in her career development. “It enhanced my writing, communication, and leadership skills, both personally and professionally,” said the married mother of three daughters. She added that through coursework and hands-on learning, she gained valuable knowledge that has helped her throughout her career.
Gutierrez is especially grateful for the 90/30 program, a partnership with NAU and the Maricopa County Community College District, enabling students to transfer up to 90 credits to NAU. Students complete community college coursework, then transfer to a convenient NAU location where they take 10 university classes (30 credits). “That program enabled me to balance my education while working full-time and supporting my family, making it possible to advance my career without financial strain.”
Today, Gutierrez is a student in the Master of Public Administration program at NAU. “My goal is to attain a leadership role focused on employee engagement, ensuring Mesa employees feel valued, empowered, and supported in their professional growth.”
Gutierrez shared that it took several years for her to realize that continuing her education was the key to achieving her career goals and providing better support for her family. She credits a great mentor who recognized her potential and encouraged her to take that important next step.
