English as a Second Language (ESL)
ESL refers to teaching English to a person whose native or primary language is one other than English. We offer a range of courses to assist students in understanding the English language.
Coursework Overview
Our ESL classes cover a range of topics from grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking; to more advanced topics like voice, diction, and the fundamentals of writing.
Mesa Community College offers classes in five different language levels. Students are initially required to take a language placement test, called the CELSA, in order to place them in the correct classes. Once the test is completed, and the student has been advised, students will either take a semester long sessions or intensive 8-week sessions.
Once these courses have been completed, a student who originally had difficulty with the English language should be better prepared for other college courses as well as future employment.

Advising for the English as a Second Language (ESL) program is available through the English department. You can also contact Advisement & Registration Services for general advising. Both will help you determine the exact courses you need to get the education you’re looking for.
