In 1989, Columbia law professor Kimberlé Crenshaw introduced the term “intersectionality”, which refers to the way various aspects of a person’s identity such as race, gender identity, disability, mental health, sexual orientation, and culture interact and overlap, shaping unique experiences of both privilege and oppression. Examining intersectionality helps us understand how these different aspects are not experienced in isolation but are interconnected, often leading to complex social identities and experiences.

This academic year, Ability Maricopa (employees with disabilities and allies) and Equality Maricopa (LGBTQIA+ employees and allies) invite everyone to create boxes that convey themes of intersectionality, including race, disability, mental health, gender, women's studies, or culture. Using our imaginations, we are altering, crafting, and building boxes as conduits for our most important stories and messages. We teach each other about differences that can lead to being left out or mistreated and differences that result in joy and pride. We teach about ourselves so others can know what we need to excel.

Our next Unboxed crafting session is on February 4th from noon to two p.m. in AS 195 and virtually. At this event, we will explore issues of identity through creative expression with one another. We will encourage participants to reflect on how their own identity and those of others interrelate. By crafting and sharing symbolic representations of identity through physical boxes, we raise awareness of underrepresented identities and promote inclusive conversations.

Please join us virtually or in person for this fun, dynamic and meaningful event on Tuesday, February 4th! If you're planning on attending virtually, contact Kate Mohler (president of Ability Maricopa) and she will provide you with crafting supplies. This endeavor will culminate in a three-hour hybrid session for box-finishing, display, and discussion at PVCC (virtually and in person) on March 26, 2025, from noon to three. Contact Kate Mohler for more information.

For inquiries about this event, please contact the person above. We strive to host accessible events that enable all individuals, including individuals with disabilities, to engage fully.
