Mesa Community College Music & Dance Department Presents: Broadway Bound

May 9 at 5 pm and at 7:30 pm – MCC Performing Arts Center  
 
Broadway Hit Revue featuring the students from the Broadway Solos Class. Enjoy a performance of musical theatre hits that will leave you humming a joyful tune. 

Proceeds benefit the Music Scholarship fund.

If you purchase a ticket for the 5 pm concert, you can attend the 7:30 pm concert for free. Be sure to select the ticket option if you’d like to attend both.

Poetry reading by Dr. Laura Tohe

About this event

The Art Gallery will feature a visit and poetry reading by Arizona Poet Laureate, Dr. Laura Tohe. 

An award-winning poet and writer, Dr. Tohe was born in Fort Defiance, Arizona, and grew up speaking both Diné bizaad/Navajo language and English. She is a professor emerita of English at Arizona State University, where she taught for 24 years. Dr. Tohe previously served as Poet Laureate of the Navajo Nation from 2015 to 2025.

Tohe’s work has been published nationally and internationally. Her oral history book, Code Talker Stories, features a series of interviews with Navajo Code Talkers and their descendants. She has been recognized with numerous awards including the 2025 Native Writers’ Circle of the Americas Lifetime Achievement Award, the Academy of Poets Fellowship Award 2020-2021, the 2019 American Indian Festival of Words Writer’s Award, the Faculty Exemplar Award from Arizona State University, and the Dan Shilling Public Scholar Award from the Arizona Humanities, and she was nominated three times for the Pushcart Prize. She holds a doctoral degree in Creative Writing and Literature from University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

“Over the course of her career, Dr. Tohe has distinguished herself as a poet, librettist, and writer of both fiction and nonfiction. She is a storyteller whose words reflect the heart, history, and hopes of our state. As Poet Laureate, Dr. Tohe will continue Arizona’s tradition of creativity and help inspire the next generation of writers.” - Governor Katie Hobbs

This event is co-sponsored by Maricopa Community Colleges American Indian Outreach under the direction of Ray Ostos, Mesa Community College (MCC) Cultural Science, Philosophy & Religious Studies Department Faculty Chair Paul Harasha, MCC Dean of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Leanna Hall and accompanies Rooted in Relations - Authenticity and the Power of Indigenous Sovereignty a group art exhibition that celebrates the interconnection, strength, and sovereignty that flow from Indigenous relationships—with land, language, culture, and community, on display through April 2.

Artist Talk with Sinnagwin

About this event

The Art Gallery will host guest speaker Sinnagwin (Roger McKinney), a professional artist, minister and member of the Kickapoo Nation of Kansas. Sinnagwin’s work reflects his perspective as an Anishinaabe artist and explores the spirit and cultural heartbeat of “Turtle Island” through Indigenous storytelling. He earned his MFA degree from the American University in 1986 and a BA degree from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa in 1982. Sinnagwin retired in 2022 as an art professor at Scottsdale Community College after 26 years.

This artist talk accompanies the Rooted in Relations - Authenticity and the Power of Indigenous Sovereignty on display through April 2.  This group exhibition of artwork celebrates the interconnection, strength, and sovereignty that flow from Indigenous relationships—with land, language, culture, and community.

Mesa Community College Music Department Presents: Fusion Jazz Band Concert with the Thelonius Monk Ensemble

April 15 at 7 pm – MCC Performing Arts Center  

 

Students and Faculty will be performing some favorites from the Jazz-Rock Fusion world. Come on down, bring a non-perishable food item and enjoy the music.   

MCC Students will be helping collect for United Way Food Bank.  

The United Food Help Feed the Hungry -

We are currently in need of the following items:

Cereal: Cheerios, raisin bran, oatmeal packets

Chili con Carne or Beef Stew

Canned Vegetables: spinach, peas, sweet potatoes, carrots

Milk: canned or dried

Canned Tomato Products: Incl. juice & sauces (no glass jars please)

Meat & Meat Alternates: canned tuna, chicken & peanut butter

The New Guard Big Band is Phoenix’s premier jazz orchestra, comprised of the most talented and in-demand musicians in the Valley. Focusing primarily on the works of Count Basie and his Famous Orchestra, this 17-piece ensemble (managed and rehearsed by Kevin Tangney) is a musical freight train full of swagger and swing.

Mesa Community College Music Department Present: Percussion Concert 

May 4 at 7 pm - MCC Performing Arts Center

 

The MCC percussion ensemble is a diverse group of young percussionists performing contemporary literature from some of today's major composers.  Everything from multi-percussion duets to full ensemble pieces will be performed, which will include a variety of instruments such as marimbas, vibraphones, timpani, drum sets and more.
