Hybrid Classes FAQ

Student at Window
  • What are hybrid classes?
    • Hybrid classes combine classroom and online instruction. They meet face-to-face less frequently than traditional classes, but offer more personal instructor contact than fully online classes. Though the exact format of the class depends upon the particular course, most often course delivery is split fairly evenly between classroom and online.

  • Why would I consider taking hybrid classes?
    • Greater flexibility - reduces how frequently you have to be on campus.
    • Increases the ways by which course materials may be presented.
    • Online methods of interaction can allow more time for reflection.
    • Encourages student independence while providing the support of regular face-to-face meetings with faculty.

  • Should I take hybrid classes?
  • Only you can decide whether you’re well-suited to take hybrid classes. You should try to honestly assess whether hybrid classes work best with the way that you learn. Hybrid classes may be for you if you can honestly agree with the following statements:

    • I am a self-directed, independent learner.
    • I can maintain the pace of a class with fewer classroom meetings.
    • I feel comfortable using technology and have dependable access to that technology.
    • I communicate effectively through e-mail and other online methods. As with any class, the better prepared you are before starting, the better your chances for success.
