To successfully complete MCC's elearning courses, you will need some basic computer skills. You also need access to a computer and a reliable internet service. Dial up is not recommended. Skills that you probably need to have — or be willing to learn quickly — are listed below. You will also find the minimum hardware requirements needed to take these classes. Additional skills and requirements might vary by instructor.
Minimum Computer Skills
- Start up a computer and use a keyboard; must be able to maneuver around using a mouse or touch pad
- Find, download and run a variety of software programs.
- Organize, copy, paste, name and rename data files.
- Operate a word processor, save and organize the resulting documents. Some key board skills are recommended.
- Cut and paste information from one document to another, and from one program to another.
- Access, browse and research on the World Wide Web.
- Send and receive e-mail, and attach data files to an email.
- Save attached files from an email.
- Download and save data files from a website.
- Navigate and post to a course bulletin and/or discussion boards.
Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements
- Computer:
A personal computer running Windows 7, XP or Vista, or Mac with OSX. Computers with multimedia capabilities are preferred. MCC's library computers are suitable for most eLearning classes. - Internet Access:
You will need to have an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are numerous companies that offer Internet access. DSL or Broadband connections are recommended. - A Maricopa Email Account:
You must use your GoogleApps@Maricopa account for all school related emails. - Browser:
In general, Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari work very well for eLearning courses. Microsoft Internet Explorer is not recommended. Specific browser requirements might vary by instructor. - Plugins:
You may need the current versions of the following plugins:- Adobe Acrobat reader
- Shockwave WIN or MAC or
- Flash WIN or MAC
- Windows Media or
- Quicktime
- Others may be required by the instructor.
- Word Processing Software:
Microsoft Word 6.0 or higher. If using word processing software other than MS Word, students must be able to convert files to MS Word format or save it in Rich Text Format. Instructors may not accept MS Works, OpenOffice, StarOffice, WordPerfect, and other formats.
