Next, fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. If you’re interested in paying for college with the help of federal financial aid you’ll need to submit a FAFSA every year you want aid. Processing your application can take up to a month, so we recommend you get it out of the way right now, before moving on to the next step.
If classes start before your FAFSA goes through, you will be responsible for paying out-of-pocket to keep your place in the classroom until the FAFSA is accepted and you are awarded aid. It is best to do the FAFSA as early as possible.
