Transfer Event A Big Success

by Sam Stevens (MCC Advisor)

Mesa, AZ -- On Thursday, May 3, 2014, the American Indian Center sponsored a transfer and recruitment fair.  What originally started out as an event for the American Indian student population turned into a total campus event and it was enormously successful.  Maybe it was the smells of freshly cooked barbecued pork catered by Famous Daves or maybe it was the curiosity of students walking by, wondering what was going on in the white event tent or maybe it was the laid back feeling of the event having a tailgate-like atmosphere .  Whatever the case, 120 MCC students were able to speak with college recruiters about the opportunities available at their respective programs.

Eighteen college representatives from 14 different colleges in Arizona and around the country were present at the event:

DeVry University     Excelsior College     Columbia College Chicago     University of Arizona     Arizona State University     Northern Arizona University     North Central University             Wayland Baptist University     AT Still University      Prescott College     Western NM University       Arizona Christian University     Benedictine University (Mesa)     Westminster College (Mesa)

Feedback of the event was very positive, with many of the college representatives pleased that they had talked to such a high volume of students.  Many suggested the numbers of students at last night's event were higher than what they normally speak with.  Students were very pleased as well, several exclaiming that they had not known beforehand all of the various program options available and ways to complete their college degrees.

All in all, it was a great time!  For those that missed it be sure to look for another transfer fair in the future.  The American Indian Center would like to thank all the colleges and their representatives who attended, as well as express their gratefulness for all the students who contributed their time and energy to make the event successful.  It was definitely a team effort and there was some great barbecue as well!!!
