The Asian and Pacific Islander Association (APIA) is one of MCCCD employee constituency groups. APIA represents the Asian Pacific Islander culture that provides support and advocacy for specific and shared group needs. APIA also supports student success through student convocations and scholarship efforts.

Mindfulness Discussion (hosted by MCC APIC)

Prof. Michelle Jung and Ms. Meggie Tran will discuss how to identify controllable stressors and create methods for dealing with them. Participants will learn about various mindfulness techniques to utilize when they feel overwhelmed.

Michelle Jung is the Wellness and Fitness Supervisor at Mesa Community College. She is a native of Arizona and a graduate of Arizona State University (B.S., 2001; M.S., 2004). As a first-generation Asian-American (Chinese & Japanese), she is familiar with many of the challenges facing APIA students navigating multiple cultures to find their own path.

Prior to her position at MCC, Michelle served as the Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness at Arizona State University for 8 years. She has taught fitness and wellness classes for over 20 years and is excited to share her knowledge on mindfulness and wellness with participants.

Dr. Baskind is currently adjunct instructor for Japanese language in The World Languages Department at Mesa Community College. He is a specialist of Japanese
religions, culture, and literature. Before returning to the US, he was most recently Associate Professor of Japanese Intellectual History at Nagoya City University, Nagoya, Japan. His areas of research are Sino-Japanese relations during the Edo period, Buddhist Christian interaction during the early 17th century, and tea culture in East Asia.

Advancing the pipeline of Asian Americans toward senior level administration in higher education is a priority of APAHE. Less than 1% of the three thousand colleges and universities in the United States are only led by a person of Asian American descent. At whatever level or role in academics, student, or administrative services you currently hold, we believe you have the potential to advance as a director, chair, dean, vice president or president. We acknowledge the core of who you are as an Asian American and can provide the tools and mentorship for advancement.

Dr. Kathy Nakagawa, Associate Professor of Asian Pacific American Studies, Arizona State University, will conduct a lecture on the diversity and history of the AAPI population in Arizona, the different stereotypes often affecting AAPI students, and how to resist these stereotypes in the classroom.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are the fastest growing ethnic minority population in Arizona, but often receive little attention due to the "model minority myth." In this session, we'll discuss the diversity and history of the AAPI population in Arizona, the different stereotypes and anti-Asian racism often affecting AAPI communities, and ways of supporting AAPI students.
