The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Mechanical Drafting program prepares students to work in the mechanical drafting field. The program emphasizes current technological trends in the industry and is designed both for those planning to enter a career in the field as well as for those already working in the field who want to advance and update their knowledge and skills.

What You’ll Learn

This pathway map will help you gain the expertise needed to:

  1. Prepare drawings using drafting instrument/equipment such as drafting machine, triangles, scales (English and Metric), templates, bow compass, lettering guide and mechanical pencils.
  2. Prepare drawings consisting of geometric construction, orthographic projection (multiviews), and auxiliary/sectional views.
  3. Apply Gothic lettering, dimensions (English and Metric), tolerances, and allowances to machine detail and assembly drawings.
  4. Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing practices.
  5. Set up and operate CAD system to generate drawings.
  6. Set up and operate CAD system to generate three-dimensional drawings.
  7. Create physical 3D models using 3D printing techniques.
  8. Explain the theory of the processes of machining, forming, casting, joining (assembly), and conditioning as they relate to the conversion of materials to finished products.
  9. Apply match skills in solving drafting related problems.
  10. Graphically model manufacturing simulations.
  11. Identify the sources of waste in a manufacturing enterprise and recommend solutions to reduce or eliminate waste.

Course Sequence by Term

The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:

  • Students should meet with an academic advisor to develop an individual education plan that meets their academic and career goals. Use the Pathway Planner tool in your Student Center to manage your plan.
  • The course sequence is laid out by suggested term and may be affected when students enter the program at different times of the year.
  • Initial course placement is determined by current district placement measures and/or completion of 100-200 level course and/or program requirements.
  • Degree and transfer seeking students may be required to successfully complete a MCCCD First Year Experience Course (FYE) within the first two semesters at a MCCCD College. Courses include FYE101 and FYE103. Course offerings will vary by college. See an academic, program, or faculty advisor for details.
