Applications in Geospatial Technologies Track I: Technician

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Applications in Geospatial Technologies program provides a solid foundation in Geographic Information Systems concepts, not simply GIS software. This program equips students with fundamental GIS abilities that can be applied in a variety of environments where spatial data analysis is required.

What You’ll Learn

This pathway map will help you gain the expertise needed to:

  1. Explain the processes by which population is measured and analyzed, and identify governmental and individual policies toward population.
  2. Describe spatial and functional relationships among climates, landforms, soils, water, and plants.
  3. Identify and describe the characteristics of the earth (size, shape, movement).
  4. Explain datums, projections, and coordinate systems.
  5. Examine the purpose and application of GIS.
  6. Perform data management tasks including, creating, querying, editing, joining, and customizing spatial and non-spatial data.
  7. Produce a map from several data sources.
  8. Explain the uses of statistical data, classification, and levels of measurement.
  9. Identify Python syntax and ArcGIS error codes and messages.
  10. Add and modify geoprocessing functions.
  11. Design and implement a spatial database.
  12. Explain spatial analysis operations for vector and raster data.
  13. Design, develop, and implement a spatial analysis project.
  14. Develop and implement a map series utilizing appropriate scale and projection.
  15. Explain the fundamental physical processes behind remote sensing.
  16. Differentiate supervised vs.
  17. Use the basic elements and components of the Microsoft Access program, and analyze common database management problems related to the program.
  18. Explain concepts of problem solving, structured and object-oriented programming in Java, fundamental algorithms and techniques, and computer system concepts.
  19. Identify and explain social and ethical responsibilities associated with the use of computerized information systems.
  20. Perform the operation of differentiation and integration on functions of one variable.
  21. Utilize Object-Oriented programming concepts in Java.
  22. Demonstrate an understanding of data analysis involved in relational databases.
  23. Create a new SQL Server database.
  24. Write programs using basic data structures such as arrays, ArrayLists, and Vectors.
  25. Analyze and compare the efficiency of different searching and sorting algorithms, including algorithms that are implemented recursively.

Course Sequence by Term

The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:

  • The course sequence is laid out by suggested term and may be affected when students enter the program at different times of the year.
  • Initial course placement is determined by current district placement measures and/or completion of 100-200 level course and/or program requirements.
  • Degree and transfer seeking students may be required to successfully complete a MCCCD First Year Experience Course (FYE) within the first two semesters at a MCCCD College. Courses include CPD150, CPD150AC, CPD104, and AAA115/CPD115. Course offerings will vary by college. See an academic, program, or faculty advisor for details.
  • Students should meet with an academic advisor about any concerns that may affect course enrollment.
