Field of Interest: Visual and Performing Arts

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Retail Sales Manager is designed for students with an interest in retail store management. Students learn about apparel and retail store management, merchandising, salesmanship, customer service, basic computer systems, and human resources. They develop the ability to train and manage personnel in a store, display and merchandise their areas or store, effectively train personnel to sell the merchandise, and manage stocks and profitability.

What You’ll Learn

This pathway map will help you gain the expertise needed to:

  1. Create a marketing and promotion plan, applying an understanding of consumer behavior, marketing principles and merchandising strategies.
  2. Perform basic mathematical functions related to supply chain management.
  3. Apply management techniques to finance, control, merchandising, sales, promotion, operations, and stock shrinkage.
  4. Utilize sales presentation skills as they relate to the fashion industry.
  5. Employ current computer and information technologies to perform business functions.
  6. Coordinate displays, advertising, and personal selling efforts.
  7. Select merchandise with performance and care characteristics that will satisfy the needs and wants of customers.
  8. Assess the different quality levels of apparel construction.
  9. Effectively manage relationships with customers and co-workers.
  10. Analyze color and design elements used in the fashion industry for apparel and marketing.
  11. Apply techniques to create customer satisfaction, including responsiveness, reliability, empathy and tangible service in a work environment.

Course Sequence by Term

The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:

  • Initial course placement is determined by current district placement measures and/or completion of 100-200 level course and/or program requirements.
  • Degree and transfer seeking students may be required to successfully complete a MCCCD First Year Experience Course (FYE) within the first two semesters at a MCCCD College. Courses include FYE101 and FYE103. Course offerings will vary by college. See an academic, program, or faculty advisor for details.
