MESA, Arizona – Feb. 24, 2019 – Mesa Community College (1833 W. Southern Ave.) invites the public to an afternoon of art, theatre and thought-provoking conversation on March 2, to kick off Women’s History Month.
Two mainstage performances of "Top Girls," a Caryl Churchill play about women’s achievement, takes place in the MCC Theatre at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on March 2.
Between the afternoon and evening performances of "Top Girls," theatregoers may also attend the free special Saturday Art Gallery exhibition of The Body Politic at 4 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., with a reception and forum discussion on perspectives of women at 5 p.m. The MCC Art Gallery is in close proximity to the MCC Theatre.
Forum panelists include MCC "Top Girls" cast, the director; artists from The Body Politic exhibit,and MCC faculty. The panel discussion focuses on perspectives of women throughout history and women’s roles in society with the opportunity to view the figurative paintings in The Body Politic exhibit.
"Top Girls," set in Britain in the early 1980s, examines what it means to be a successful woman, initially using historical characters to explore aspects of women’s social achievement. The Body Politic exhibition in the Art Gallery is an investigation of the place of figurative painting in our era of political unrest. It features the work of Caroline Estelle, Rigo Flores, Tyler Griese, Lisa Von Hoffner, Larry Madrigal, Forrest Solis, Papay Solomon and Chris Vena. Please note that this exhibition contains nudity, adult themes and content, and therefore may not be suitable for all audiences. Tickets to the forum discussion and gallery exhibition are free, but an RSVP is requested (mesacc.edu/arts/ZAo).
