Donate Your Gown After Graduation!
Help your community and make an impact on the environment ~ a small effort can foster big change.
YOU are the solution!
After the ceremony, keep your cap and tassel as your graduation memento. Drop your gown in the collection bin (located on the way to the parking lot) to donate it for reuse.
Two bins are available to drop off gowns at the Southern and Dobson Campus. One is located near College Safety and the other is near the Enrollment Center. For every pound of clothing donated in the bins, MCC gets .10 cents, which is used to support student scholarships.
Did You Know?
- Over the last 25 years, synthetic petroleum-based and non-biodegradable graduation gowns have been manufactured and promoted as necessary souvenir items for students. Although this material is relatively inexpensive and easy to produce, its effects on the environment are detrimental. Each 90- minute ceremony does over 450 years of damage to our ecosystem.
- 3.2 million gallons of oil are used to produce 5.5 million graduation gowns EVERY YEAR! Most will eventually end up in the landfill.
- 100 million petroleum-based gowns have already ended up in landfills in the past 25 years
