Study Abroad

The International Education (IE) Office offers two study abroad scholarships to provide financial support to students who wish to participate in a Mesa Community College (MCC) sponsored study abroad program. If participating in more than one program, a scholarship application must be completed for EACH program.

MCC International Education Study Abroad Scholarship

  • Maximum Award (all programs except Puerto Peñasco): $1,000
  • Maximum Award for Puerto Peñasco: $400
  • May be used to fund program fees and/or tuition and registration fees.
  • Completion of  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is optional, but highly recommended.  File FAFSA prior to January 16, 2018.
  • Applications will be scored on the following criteria:
    • Personal Statement of Financial Need: Explain why you need financial assistance and how you plan to pay for college.  How you are currently financing your education (e.g. help from family, financial aid, student loans, working part-time or full-time, etc.).  What difficulties have you faced in paying for your education?
    • Cumulative GPA
    • Student Status: Current MCC student, a MCCCD student, an in-state student, or an out-of-state student
    • Demonstration of Financial Need: Optional completion of 2017-2018 FAFSA.  If you need assistance, visit Enrollment Services or call 1-855-622-2332.

Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship

  • Award limited to tuition and fees (1-6 credits) associated with courses that have a start date prior to June 21, 2018 (Britain program excluded).
  • Application for the Maricopa Grant is incorporated into the IE Study Abroad Scholarship application, but REQUIRES completion of 2017-2018 FAFSA.
  • If you wish to be considered for a Maricopa Scholarship Grant, your 2017-2018 FAFSA (MCC school code 001077) should completed prior to January 16, 2018.
  • May be awarded in addition to the IE Study Abroad Scholarship.
  • Applications will be scored on following criteria:
    • Demonstration of Financial Need: Requires completion of the 2017‑2018 FAFSA. If you need assistance, visit Enrollment Services or call 1‑855‑622‑2332.
    • Grant is open to ALL students, but focuses on students of color and/or under-represented populations participating in MCC's study abroad programs.

Scholarship Deadline: Friday, February 16, 2018 at 11:59 pm (no exceptions)

  • Awards will be announced via email by mid-March, 2018.

  • Awards are disbursed to student account during the first week of classes along with financial aid.

What to do before you begin your scholarship applications:

  1. Before applying for any study abroad scholarship(s), you MUST have applied to and been accepted into a study abroad program at MCC.
  2. Get admitted to MCC
    • You will be prompted to enter your Student ID Number. You can find your Student ID Number in your My.maricopa.edu account.
    • Go to My.maricopa.edu to apply for a MEID.
  3. Complete the Student Declaration Form at MCC to update your residency status.
  4.  Make a program fee confirmation deposit of $250 ($150 for Puerto Peñasco) to Cashier Services.
  5. Complete the the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by January 16, 2018  (at least 30 days before the scholarship deadline of February 16, 2018).

How to apply for the study abroad scholarships:

  1. Complete the general application in the Maricopa Community Colleges Scholarships Database online at maricopa.academicworks.com/users/sign_in.  The general application is only required to be completed once per academic year.  If you have previously completed the general application you may proceed to apply for any of the study abroad scholarships.
  2. Once you begin your scholarship application, you will be able to save your work and return at any time to complete and submit your application.  Make sure you click on save before you log out so that you don't lose all your information.
  3. Once you complete the general application, you will then be able to apply for the International Education Study Abroad Scholarships.

NOTE: There are seven different International Education Study Abroad Scholarship applications, one for each individual study abroad program.  The applications must be completed for each program you plan to attend in order to be considered for a scholarship. For each Scholarship criteria please click on one of the programs.

  1. AFTER YOU SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE ANY CHANGES TO YOUR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION.  Please check all your answers before you submit your application.
  2. Incomplete scholarship applications will automatically be disqualified.
  3. All scholarships awarded are conditional upon your full participation in your study abroad program.  If you withdraw from your program, for any reason (voluntary or involuntary), all awards will be revoked. If your award is revoked after funds have been disbursed to you, you will be billed for the amount of the award through your My.maricopa.edu student account.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program Application

The Gilman Scholarship Programsponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, provides awards up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
