Initiative Description/ Objective

This initiative will develop a risk-intelligent campus by promoting awareness and action in the campus community.

A recent survey of college and university leaders (January 2018, Inside Higher Ed) shows that the categories of campus climate, sexual assault and student behavior are within the top four reputational risks to institutions over the last three years.

Compliance Services manages the Risk Assessment ‘Screening’ Tool and the Maricopa Integrated Risk Assessment (MIRA) Tool at MCC.  We take a proactive approach by managing ongoing risk-assessments for the following:

Campus reputation

  • campus climate
  • sexual assault (Clery)
  • student behavior
  • Study Abroad

Harm to people

  • physical injury
  • keeping students informed

Fiscal risk to campus

  • good stewards of financial resources

Physical campus

  • property damage

Accessibility

  • emergency/evacuation procedures
  • signage

OBJECTIVE: Compliance Services will promote a risk-intelligent campus by raising awareness and action in using the MIRA Risk Assessment and Screening Tool; our goal is for 80% of the campus activities to be run through the screening tool by the end of the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Assessment Care Team (ACT) is an academic and behavioral support system for students, set in motion by faculty and staff.  It is managed by Compliance Services and is supported by the following departments:

  • EARS
  • Faculty
  • Counseling Services
  • Dean/VP of Student Affairs
  • DRS/Veteran’s Services
  • Institutional Advancement
  • MCC Police Department

Students are more likely to persist and succeed if they are in a safe and supportive environment.  The goal of ACT is to educate and mold consensus while providing supportive resources in order to meet the needs of students at-risk.

KTAR News: Suicide is the second most common cause of death for young adults, with only accidents exceeding it.

OBJECTIVE: ACT will provide awareness sessions to all academic and student affairs departments by the end of the 2019-2020 academic year.

This initiative will promote effective communication across the campus community with the goal of promoting a transparent and inclusive atmosphere.  Students are more likely to persist if they are in a predictable and safe environment

Compliance Services will develop and disseminate awareness materials related to applicable Federal, State and District laws, regulations and policies to the MCC community.

OBJECTIVE: Compliance Services will provide weekly email and Intranet updates to the MCC community related to applicable Federal, State and District laws, regulations and policies.

Assessment Type  and Criteria for Success

Excel spreadsheet will be created to organize and manage the risk assessments of the campus activities; we will keep track of all campus sponsored activities and identify those activities that went through the risk assessment process vs. those that did not.

A list of all student affairs and academic departments will be compiled; we will reach out to key personnel in each department to schedule the session; data will be kept in a spreadsheet; completion percentages will be available weekly

An Excel spreadsheet will be created to organize and manage the weekly email and Intranet communications to the campus community; completion percentages will be available weekly
