Schizophrenia

What is it?

  • Psychotic disorder
  • Disabling brain disease
  • Typical onset in late teens and mid-30's

Four central issues:

  • Delusions: false personal beliefs, grandiosity, paranoia
  • Hallucinations: hearing voices, seeing things that are not there
  • Disorganized speech: inability to follow a line of logic, using nonsense sentences
  • Disorganized behavior: strange or socially inappropriate behavior

What does it look like?

  • Problems attending classes or appointments
  • Loss of desire to study or attend class
  • Difficulties concentrating and memorizing
  • Appears disinterested and lethargic
  • Socially isolates because others perceive them as strange or scary
  • Frequent absences due to hospitalizations
