Units for ELLs in Mainstream or ELD classrooms

In the academic year 2016-2017 teachers participating in TL3C Workshops developed Unit/Lesson plans to use with English language learners in Mainstream and/or ELD/SEI classrooms.

Kindergarten
ELD and Ladybugs

In this unit, students will learn at the Basic level of R,W,S, and L. We will bring in Science by using the theme of ladybugs. Click for PDF of Unit/Lesson Plan.

Plants All Around Us

In this unit, students will answer two questions: how can we use books and the world around us to learn about plants? and how can we grow new plants from old ones? Click for PDF of Unit/Lesson Plan.

Plants

In this unit, students will focus on living and nonliving things. They will learn about plant parts, their functions, and what plants need in order to live (Life Science). Click for PDF of Unit/Lesson Plan.

Pumpkin Life Cycle

In this unit, students will plant pumpkins seeds and observe changes that occur. Students will keep an observation journal (using simple sentence and pictures) to show the physical changes in pumpkin plants throughout their life cycle. Students will use key vocabulary to describe what is observed in the life cycle of a pumpkin. Students will create a representation to show the sequence of the life cycle of a pumpkin. 1st Grade
Ancient Egypt

In this unit students learn about how Egyptian ancient civilization settlements led to the development of farming techniques, had government, art/architecture, and writing. Students will also focus on being able to write in grammatically correct, complete sentences with subject/verb agreement and using prepositional phrases of time and/or location correctly. Solids and Liquids

In this “hands on” unit, students will identify solid and liquid material using a variety of materials and classify them by their attributes. Click for PDF of Unit/Lesson Plan.

Spooky Teens Math Unit

In this Unit, students will learn Teen Numbers 11-19. Students will learn to read numerals, write numerals, represent a number on a double ten frame, and decompose a number with 10 and and some more within 11-19. Click for PDF of Unit/Lesson Plan.

2nd Grade
Life Cycle of a Butterfly

In this unit students will learn about the four stages of the Life Cycle of a Butterfly. Students will learn content vocabulary and sequencing adverbs to explain each stage. Click for PDF of Unit/Lesson Plan.

2nd Grade
Weather and Temperature

In this unit students will learn how to use a thermometer to measure and record temperature. Students will be able to identify different temperature ranges and classify those ranges into freezing, cold, cool, warm, hot, very hot. Click for PDF of Unit/Lesson Plan.

4th Grade
Processes that Change the Earth: Weathering

In this lesson students will learn about the weather process and how it changes the earth's surface. Click for PDF of Unit/Lesson Plan.

5th Grade
Body Systems: Skeletal, Muscular and Nervous

In this unit, students will learn about 3 human body systems:skeletal, muscular, and nervous. The mini-unit is part of a larger biology unit that also includes study of cells, tissues, organs, human organ systems, heredity, genes, and inherited physical characteristics. 7th Grade
Floor Hockey

Middle School
Space Exploration and Persuasive Speech

In this unit students will be able to create a persuasive essay by reading John F. Kennedy’s speech Remarks at the Dedication of the Aerospace Medical Health Center. The speech and other reading will provide a sound example of elements of persuasive writing. Click for PDF of Unit/Lesson Plan.
