Civic Engagement Scholarship

DEFINITION: Civic engagement encompasses actions to promote the quality of life in the community, through both political and non-political processes.

To qualify for the Civic Engagement Scholarship, a student must:

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better (out of a possible 4.0) at MCC
    •  (Students new to MCC must show a 2.5 GPA or better at their most recent educational institution)
  • Complete at least 100 hours of service toward a civic engagement project over the past 12 months
    • Note, hours may only be used once for each scholarship
  • Have confirmation letter(s) from the organization(s) or Advisor to validate service
  • Be enrolled at MCC as a student (6 hours or more) for the semester the award is used

Please note the following criteria:

  • To be selected as a recipient a student must be working to make a difference in our community
  • Reflection essay must show the development of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make a difference through a meaningful civic engagement project
  • Student may also enroll in an Independent Service-Learning course to work with a faculty on planning, developing and implementing a project to earn the service hours needed for this award
  • Training/meetings/conference hours are not considered service hours
  • Civic engagement project should be documented with the following information:
  • Community Issue       
  • Site of Service                                         
  • Dates of service
  •  # of hours served       
  • Site Supervisor Contact Information      
  • Reflection essay

Award Amount:  $500.00
