Mesa Community College Music Department present Desert Echoes Flute Project Concert

March 3 at 7:30pm Performing Arts Center

The Desert Echoes Flute Project concert presents several newer works for flute choir and features flute soloist Rhonda Bowen.

The DEF Community Flute Choir will perform Grow as a River by Jonathan Cohen (2022) and the multi-movement work Ancient Impressions by Blaz Pucihar (2019).

Grow as a River describes the life of a river from inception to maturity. It begins with tenuous drops from melting ice, slowly forming into a brook that playfully dances around rocks and over bumps until it becomes a majestic and peaceful flow. The idyll is shattered by a raging waterfall, though the erratic motion and anarchy and terror are gradually replaced by the exhilaration and then peace of motion and arrival. Finally, there is proud celebration in the power and accomplishment and future of the fully mature river. The story of the river is a metaphor for all successful maturation journeys. The composer was inspired to write this piece by his visit to Goðafoss, a waterfall of awe, beauty, power, and history, located near Akureyri, Iceland.

DEFproject will perform the National Flute Association's Flute Choir Call for Scores 1st Place winner, Colibri by Jeremy Umlauf (2022). Colibri is a fast-paced piece for flute choir that provides an involved part for each member of the ensemble. It begins with a stream of double-tongued repeated sixteenth notes that are passed around the ensemble. This background idea is then twisted and morphed to become other textures throughout the piece. These streams of double-tongued notes are reminiscent of a hummingbird’s wings flapping, hence the title, Colibri.

For the Beauty of the Earth by John Rutter is an uplifting and lovely choral composition arranged by Matt Johnston (2022) for flute choir. The piece was a finalist in the NFA's Newly Published music Competition.

DEFproject features Rhonda Bowen on Earth by Takatsugu Muramatsu. This beautiful and melodic piece was originally written for flute and piano and Dr. Raymond Pancost artfully arranged it in 2019 for flute soloist and fute orchestra. Muramatsu is a Japanese composer of music for films and television dramas and performs as a pianist playing mostly his original songs.

The DEF Chamber Choir opens the concert with the opening two movements of Suite Picaresque by David Uber. Written for eight flute parts, it utilizes the unusual Eb soprano flute.
