The modern mixture for pipe smoking is about two-thirds tobacco to one-third Kinnikinnick. The leaves are toasted either before an open fire, by placing a sprig of the plant in a cleft stick that is stuck in the ground, or in a sweat-house. In the latter case, branches of the shrub are laid on the sweat-house framework, between the frame and the covering, and left for an hour or more--during the course of a sweat-bath. The leaves are browned and dried as effectively by the steam as by dry heat. -=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=-
