The Nag Hammadi Codices The codex format was invented in the 200s B.C.E., but the scroll remained the preferred format throughout the Empire until the early Christians embraced the codex in the 100s C.E. The Nag Hammadi collection is among the earliest surviving examples (the only earlier surviving examples are three copies of the Bible commissioned by Constantine in 325), and it is by far the largest early collection. |
