NOTE: Bio 181 is the first semester of a two-semester sequence, Bio 181/182. It is highly recommended that you take both semesters of General Biology at the same college.

Grading Policy: Your grade in Bio 181 will be determined entirely by the number of points you earn. There will be NO scale, curve, or extra credit.
- Midterm exams will cover material from lectures and reading assignments. These exams will consist of mostly multiple choice and essay questions. (If necessary, you may take ONE make-up exam during the semester. Arrangements must be made before the scheduled exam date, otherwise the maximum exam score will be reduced by 20%. Make up exams will consist of 20 short answer questions.)
- The final exam will be one half over new material and one half comprehensive (you will be given a list of study questions for the comprehensive portion).
- Lab quizzes will be discussed in the laboratory.
- Writing assignments will be discussed at a later date.

Attendance Policy
Lecture – I frequently give in-class assignments. If a student is absent or tardy and misses the assignment, he/she cannot make it up. The student will receive a zero for the assignment.
Laboratory –Pre-lab questions are due during the first 5 minutes of the laboratory period.  If turned in late, there will be a penalty of 4 points (regardless of the reason for being late).  Laboratory quizzes will be given at the beginning of the period, and will concern the exercise done the previous week. Students may only take quizzes for lab exercises that they have completed.  A student who was absent or left early the previous week will not be allowed to take the quiz for that exercise.

Assignment due dates and late policy
Writing and miscellaneous assignments will be given frequently during the semester. In each case a “due date” will be provided. Assignments turned in up to and on this date are eligible for full credit. Assignments turned in one to seven days late will be eligible for 80% credit. Assignments will not be accepted more than one week late. No excuses are accepted.

Withdrawal Policy
Students who miss the first day of class may be withdrawn.
Prior to March 4, students who miss 3 class periods may be withdrawn for non-attendance. After March 2, should it become necessary for you to withdraw from the course, it is your responsibility to fill out the required paperwork. Students who simply stop attending class will receive either an F or an Y (withdrawn failing) for the course. (I do NOT withdraw students who take the final exam.)
Last day that withdrawal is possible – FRIDAY, May 4.

Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. A first offence will result in a zero for the assignment. A second offence will result in an F for the course and a report to the Dean of Students. Please avoid even the appearance of academic dishonesty.
