CLASS OBJECTIVE:  Continued study of essential grammar of the Spanish language and of Spanish-speaking cultures and continued practice and development of reading, writing, and speaking skills.  Emphasis on fluency and accuracy in spoken Spanish.

CLASS POLICIES, ETC. (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

1.  Attendance and participation.  Your attendance and punctuality are essential for success.  You are expected to attend all sessions and be prepared to participate (active participation is required).  If you are absent and I don’t hear from you, your absence is an “unexcused” absence.  Refer to page 18 of the Catalog 2006-07.  With Three unexcused absences, the instructor may initiate an official withdrawal.

2.  Assignments.

                     a.  Quia Workbook/ Lab Manual.  It contains exercises related to each lesson.  Each lesson must be completed by the time the corresponding test is given.

                     b.  Homework.  You will be given assignments each day to help you internalize the material that has been presented in class, and to familiarize you with the next day’s work.  These materials will be corrected in class.  You must keep a folder of the assignments.  Date each assignment.  The folder will be turned in the day of each test.

                     d.  NO EXTRA CREDIT will be offered in this course.

3.  Tests.

                     a.  Six tests (pruebas) will be given at the end of each lesson.  NO MAKE-UP TESTS will be given.

                     b.  There will be a comprehensive oral and written final exam.  Students must take the final examination at the scheduled times.

4. Literatura - ¡Vamos a leer!

a.    There will be 1-2 short literature readings for each lesson.  A quiz (6 total) will be given for each lesson’s reading(s).

5. Language Lab. Students are required to do 60 minutes of lab work (in the foreign language lab –AS110) before each test. The lab is monitored by a lab technician and is open from 7am – 9pm Monday – Thursday; 7am – 4pm on Friday; and Saturday 9am – 1pm.  Beginning August 28 students may access the lab at any time during regular business hours on a first-come first-serve basis and must present a valid MCC picture student ID card to sign in. Remember: lab work constitutes 10% of the entire final grade.

6. Conversaciones. At mid-semester you will have the opportunity to practice what you know and refine your conversational skills for an entire week. This is an important part of your grade and will help prepare you for Spanish 202.

TESTING POLICY:  Students should exhibit the qualities of honesty and integrity.  Any form of dishonesty, cheating, fabrication, or plagiarism may make you subject to disciplinary action.  (See pages 20-21, Catalog 2006-07)

WITHDRAWALS, INCOMPLETES, and F’s:  Policy set forth in MCC catalog, page 18, will be followed.  If an “F” is earned, it will be given.  “D’s” are not given instead of “F’s” because the student is on probation, on scholarship, or any other reason.

The last day for a student’s initiated withdrawal is October 7.  Make sure that you take care of the paper work necessary for any type of class withdrawal.  This is the student’s not the instructor’s responsibility.  Students who do not follow the outlined procedure may receive a grade of “F” for the semester.

Special requests:  The instructor will make any reasonable accommodations for students with limitations due to disabilities by following the advice sent from the MCC Disable Student Services ((480)461-7447).  Please contact them and the instructor before or on the first day of the course.

Note:  Course content may vary from this outline to meet the needs of this particular group.  Any student who is disruptive to the point that it affects the learning process will be asked to leave.
