The Official Course Description:
Introduction to the nature and role of religious beliefs and practices in shaping the lives of individuals and societies, with particular attention to the modern world. Prerequisites: ENG101, or ENG107, or equivalent.
In this course we will explore the place and influence of religions in our world today. A quick listening to or reading of any news source reminds us that religion is an integral part of the global world in which we live. Avoiding serious misunderstandings and misconceptions requires that we know and understand how people perceive the world around them and how they assign meaning to its events and their actions.
We will not cover particular religions as in a World Religions class. If you have not taken a World Religion class, you may read Tom Shoemaker's Engagement (available online this semester at no charge) to learn about the major world religions as a foundation for understanding how they shape the world we live in today and class discussion.
