This course focuses on the cultures, peoples, and texts that contributed to the foundation of our society. By studying works by writers of culturally diverse backgrounds, you will gain experience reading, analyzing, and interpreting literature. In addition, the course establishes connections between literature and other areas of arts, communications, and cultural studies. Our readings will focus on the literary genres of drama, poetry, and fiction and will include works by W.B.Yeats, William Shakespeare, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Langston Hughes, Edgar Allan Poe, Gwendolyn Brooks, Emily Dickinson, James Joyce, Walt Whitman and others. We will supplement our readings with film, art, and music. On a more informal note, the book that I have chosen for this course, Literature - an Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama, includes a CD ROM with a wealth of interactive explorations on the writers we discuss. This is a truly valuable resource that will serve you well for years to come.
