CIS290AC - CIS Internship
3 Credits,
Online Course

General Course Information

Internship Description:

Internships provide work experience in business or industry. It is the student's responsibility to find an internship that qualifies for the program, however the Business and Information System Department or MCC's Internship Center may have a list of internships that are available with businesses that have agreed to provide a mentor and meet the various requirements.

Prerequisites: Students should be in second or third semester of their programs before seeking internship opportunities. Students are required to meet with the Internship Coordinator, Dr. Susan Taffer, 480-461-7592, at the Career Services Center first before signing up for this course.

Internship Core Requirements:

  • Internship Proposal (includes Learning Objectives)
  • Work Experience - 50 clock hours per credit hour
  • Reflective Journals
  • Meeting with Faculty Mentor as needed
  • Analytical Paper
  • Evaluation

Credit Hours and Clock Hours:

Enroll in CIS290AC for 3 credit hours. Each credit hour requires 50 hours of work experience. Over a typical 15-week semester, 3.33 hours per week would be required for each credit hour. For 1 credit hour it would be about 3.33 hours. For 2 credit hours it would about 6.7 hours, and for 3 credit hours it would be about 10 hours per week (10 hours X 15 weeks = 150 hours).

Internship Grading:

Grading will be based on how much of the Core Requirements listed above is completed.

90% = A
80% = B
70% = C
60% = D
59% <= F

Students that wish to earn a Pass/Fail (P/Z) grade in this course instead of a standard grade must inform me of this right away during the first week of class. We must file a Letter-Grade Contract form by the end of the second week of classes.

Instructor's Contact Information: You can use Webct (Blackboard Learning System) which is your CIS290AC course email to contact me. This is my prefer method instead of my regular Mesa's email: loaug75281@maricopa.edu. I would prefer students to use the Webct email account instead of my MCC's email. To contact me by email (either in WebCT or regular mail), please allow at least 48 hours weekday response time. In most cases, you will be contacted after the weekend or holiday.

NOTE: Before you send your message, be sure you are using your MCC email account (or use the Blackboard course email). Based on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) that protects student privacy -- grades and personal information can only be released to the student; therefore, you must use your personal MCC email account when communicating with online correspondence to assure information being released is going directly to you.

Grading:

Points can be accumulated through online discussions, reports, presentations, and other assignments. The grading can be changed at instructor's discretion. Advanced notice will be given regarding the change.

Grading Scale: Grading is based on total points earned divided by total points possible. Those points are applied to the following grading scale:

90% - 100% = A
8
0% - 89%   = B

70% - 79%   = C
6
0% - 69%   = D

Submitting Assignments:

Students are required to complete a weekly report on the activities that they are performed each week at the internship location. Some special project assignments are submitted using an online Dropbox. All assignments and course information are inside WebCT. Students are advised to log into the course weekly to check for any updates and to submit your weekly assignments.

Virus Protection Program: Ensure you have a virus protection software package (i.e. Norton's, McAfee, Penicillin, AVG, etc.)  installed/updated on your computer if you'll be working at home/work. Files with viruses will not be accepted.

All assignments, course outlines, schedules, grading requirements, etc. are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.

MCC Early Alert Program (EARS)

Mesa Community College is committed to the success of all our students.  Numerous campus support services are available throughout your academic journey to assist you in achieving your educational goals.  MCC has adopted an Early Alert Referral System (EARS) as part of a student success initiative to aid students in their educational pursuits.  Faculty and Staff participate by alerting and referring students to campus services for added support.  Students may receive a follow up call from various campus services as a result of being referred to EARS.  Students are encouraged to participate, but these services are optional.  Early Alert Web Page with Campus Resource Information can be located at:  http://www.mesacc.edu/students/ears.

CHALLENGES:

1. Your instructor is willing to make reasonable accommodations for limitations due to any special needs from students, including learning challenges. Please see your instructor before or after class or email your instructor during the first week of class to discuss any special needs that you may have.  Also, our Special Services office will be able to assist students with learning challenges.

2.  Besides academic performance, students should exhibit the qualities of honesty and integrity. Any form of dishonesty, cheating, fabrication, the facilitation of academic dishonesty, and plagiarism may make you subject to disciplinary action.  Please refer to the student handbook for information regarding institutional policy and due process procedures.

3.  Course content may vary to meet the needs of this class.  Students will be notified on any changes throughout the semester.
