The
Official Course Description:
The
development of various religions from the prehistoric to modern times.
Political, economic, social and geographic relationships among world
religions. Consideration of both Eastern and Western religions.
Course Objectives:
This course is designed to introduce you to the basic history and significant themes of the major world religions. Besides lectures, we will engage in discussion, group activity, see films, and even some play-acting (predominantly for tribal and Eastern traditions). Reading the assigned materials, utilizing outside sources, and adequate attendance, should enable you to effectively grasp material, that for most of you will appear quite foreign. I continually strive not to fall into the trap of being a “lecture-holic,” and strive to have you all become active learners, not passive receptacles of information. I approach all of my students as intelligent individuals with a myriad of life experiences that can be utilized to enliven the class and to help in our understanding of this great subject. A benefit of this journey—learning about the world’s great religions—is a significant way of gaining a greater understanding of what diverse peoples have held, and hold to be ultimate in their beliefs and practices.
