Official Course Description:
Academic study of selected works from Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian traditions. Study of cultural and concepts of the world, history, culture, and human nature as represented in these works. Prerequisites: None.
This course is designed to introduce you to the basic history, practices, and ideals of the major world religions of Asia. Much of our understanding of these traditions will come through investigating some of the significant scriptures from each tradition. Moreover, besides lectures, we will engage in discussion, group activity, see films, and even some play-acting. It is highly recommended that you read through the assigned segments of the text and handouts before lectures so that the material becomes less foreign. Moreover, this practice helps keep you from taking too many notes. I continually strive not to fall into the trap of being a "lecture-holic," and I strive to have you all become active learners, and not mere passive receptacles of information. I approach all of my students as intelligent individuals with a myriad of life experiences that can be utilized to enliven the class and help in our understanding of this great subject. A benefit of this journey--learning about the world's great Asian religions is a significant way of gaining a greater understanding of what a major portion of the world's population hold to be ultimate in their beliefs and practices. Not to mention a long-standing curiosity that many Americans have held toward many things Asian.
