Materials:
- The required manual you will need for this class is the Physical Geology Lab Manual (by Leighty and Benson, 2011, 2nd edition) can be purchased at the MCC Bookstore or Textbook Company. You must bring the manual with you to EVERY lab (including Lab 1). If you do not come in with your lab manual, it is your responsibility to make a copy prior to the start of lab. The manual is intermediate between a textbook and workbook - pretty much everything you need to know to do well in this class is included in the manual or given in lab supplements.
- If you do not have a manual by Lab 2, you will be asked to leave class and you are responsible for making the lab up in another lab section that same week.
- If you come to class with a completed lab (or manual) anytime during the semester, it is considered cheating and you will receive a failing grade.
- Students are responsible for the college's policies stated in the MCC College Catalog and the MCC Student Handbook.
Grade: A separate grade is given for this one credit class and will be determined as follows:
A. Labs: Labs will follow the order of the lab manual

Demonstrate your Knowledge - Quiz 12 |
5/1- 5/3 |
- There are 15 labs, each worth 10 points. Every class period, you will complete the lab activities and record the answers in your manual. This is your in-class lab grade (basically, if you come to class and do the work, you get full credit).
- Labs will be checked and initialed at the end of each lab by the instructor, and if complete, 10 points are recorded. You are responsible for correcting your own work using the lab instructor's answer key before the end of each lab.
- Students may work in small groups of 2 or 3; however, each person must do the work in their own lab manual. You will want to show as much work as possible in your manual since3 you will use the completed labs to study for the quiz.
- All labs count for credit, and missed lab activities receive no credit.
- If you do miss lab for any reason, it is your responsibility to contact your instructor prior to the next meeting. Missing more than two labs will result in a withdrawal from the course.
Labs are offered at Red Mountain in PV 108 at the following times:
Tuesday: 10:30-1:00pm, Wednesday: 10-12:30pm; Instructor Kraft
Tuesday: 7:10-9:40pm; Thursday: 10:30-1:00pm Instructor Pollard
B. Quizzes: There will be a weekly, closed-book quiz, on the previous week's material.
- Each quiz is worth 10 points and all quizzes count for credit. Quiz format will include multiple-choice, short answer, matching, drawing, etc. The best way to prepare for the quiz is to study the previous week's lab questions and concepts. The quiz questions will be similar to those in the lab manual.
- Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class and you will generally be given 10 minutes to complete the quiz. You will not receive a quiz if you arrive to class after the first quiz has been completed, so don't be late to class! There are NO make-up quizzes if one is missed.
- Students who are not able to take a quiz at the appointed time (due to legitimate official/catastrophic circumstances) must contact the instructor prior to the quiz so that arrangements can be made. If you do not contact the instructor before the next class meeting, you will automatically receive a zero for the missed work.
| To Compute Your Grade: |
| Labs: |
150 points |
| Quizzes: |
120 points |
| Total: |
270 points |
Grading Scale: At the end of the semester, the totals will be computed ad standard percentages will be used: 90% or better=A, 80-89.9%=B, 70-79.9%=C, 60-69.9%=D, 59.9% or below=F.
The final grade percentages are not automatically rounded up to the next highest grade.
Attendance and Withdrawal Policy:
- Attendance is required for all labs since we are not requiring a midterm or final! If you miss a lab, you may attend another lab section during the same week, but you must have the instructor fill out and sign an attendance slip prior to making up the lab to receive credit. If you do not make up the missed lab the same week, you will receive a zero for the missed work, and you are still responsible for learning the new material since it will be on the quiz the following week.
- We do adhere to a strict attendance and participation policy in this lab. Since all labs and quizzes count for credit, missing more than two labs during the semester will result in a withdrawal from the course.
- Consult your schedule on http://my.maricopa.edu for a detailed breakdown of your personalized withdraw schedule. Requests for withdrawals after the restricted withdraw deadline will be a W or Y based on current grade status.
- Students will be charged tuition and fees when dropped from classes after the 100% refund period (whether through the purge process for non-payment or instructor removal for failure to attend). Under this new system, a student who does not withdraw or is not withdrawn during the refund period will automatically be responsible for the cost of the class. For more information, please refer to the following website: http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/students/cashiers/msrp.html
Academic Dishonesty and Disruptive Behavior:
- Any form of cheating (for example, but not limited to, coming to class with a lab that has already been completed, or copying on a quiz) will earn a failing grade in the course.
- Disruptive behavior of any type will not be tolerated in class. If you are disrupting class (talking, noisy behavior, cell phones, text messaging, passing notes, etc.) you will be asked to leave. If the disruptive behavior continues, you will be withdrawn from the class. Cell phone use (including texting) is not permitted during class time since you are expected to participate in all class activities.
Disabilities:
- If you have a disability (physical or learning), please contact Disability Resource Services at (480) 654-7770 or by email at: drs@mcmail.maricopa.edu and complete the appropriate forms as soon as possible. Reasonable accommodations can be made for limitations due to any professionally diagnosed disability. However, no special accommodations can be provided until I have received a completed instructor notification form from DRS.
