Group Activity - Ethics - Group Activity

  • Students will be assigned to a group of 4 members or less, with each member taking on one of the responsibilities listed below. All members contribute to the discussion equally:
    1. Reporter: Records and reports the group's findings back to the class at the end of the activity.
    2. Checker: Makes sure that each member agrees with the information that is going to be reported back to the class.
    3. Facilitator: Keeps the group members on task.
    4. Investigator: Asks the instructor questions for the group if clarification is needed.
  • Group members will use the web sites listed below to conduct some research for the discussion.
  • Points and issues raised by the members will be recorded the Reporter.

    1. Group members will gather after groups have been formed.
    2. Read the first passage individually before discussing as a group.
    3. Proceed with the discussion with the Reporter recordings main points and issues that are raised.
    4. Continue with the remaining passages and be sure to read each passage individually before discussing as a group. The Reporter should also record the main points and issues of the remaining passages.
    5. If time allows, the groups will report the issues they raised to the class.
  • Topics/Passages:
    1. Through the use of the Internet, information can easily be shared with the masses. One use of this technology is sharing where sex offenders reside as required by law. The sex offenders can be searched by name, address, and zip code. Once listed, the individual's personal information and picture can be displayed. Use the web site listed below to search for sex offenders near Mesa Community College (zip 85202). Review a few of the offender profiles, and discuss how you feel about having access to this information as a citizen. Then discuss how an offender may feel about having their information posted.

    2. The publishing of individuals convicted of DUI is not required by law, but yet several cities in the valley have decided to publish this information. Use the web site below to see a list of individuals recently convicted of DUI. Discuss how you feel about having access to this information as a citizen. Then discuss how an individual may feel about having their information posted.

    3. While the sex offenders and DUI sites publish information on convictions, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) publishes information on individuals that have only been arrested and charged of a crime. Use the web site below to see a list of individuals recently arrested of various crimes. Discuss how you feel about having access to this information as a citizen. Then discuss how an individual may feel about having their information posted.
