No Lab.  Hand Lab Reports

·        Reading assignments from the lab manual are shown (in parentheses) and assignments from the lecture textbook, Fundamentals of Chemistry, 4th ed. by Ralph A Burns, are shown [in brackets] .

·        You can expect 10 point quizzes on most weeks covering that week's lab, the previous week's lab and lab safety.

·        There will be three major quizzes worth 50 points each

·        All experiments are worth 20 points. The lowest experiment and 10 point quiz grades will be dropped.

·        Grades will be assigned on 90% —A, 80% —B, 70%—C and 60% —D of the total points.

·        All experiments are to be turned in at the beginning of the next laboratory period, unless directed to do otherwise.

·        All students must provide their own safety goggles.

·        If you miss a lab it may be possible to make up the lab by attending a different section that is performing the same experiment. You must get a Permission to Make-Up Laboratory Work form from the stockroom. Stockroom personnel can also help to determine when there are sections that will be doing the same experiment. Have your instructor and the instructor of the section you attend sign the form and attach it to your lab when you hand it in.

You paid for them with your Lab Fees    ($20)

                        Important Information

1.   You must wear goggles during laboratory experiments that involve

actual lab work.  Repeated violations result in loss of points   (5 pts each).

2.     Each graded report must have an instructor initials. (minus 10 pts if it is

not present on the report).  Reports are due the next laboratory period.

You will lose points for late reports (1 pt per lab period).

3.  Laboratory experiments may only be conducted during the scheduled

laboratory periods.  You may make them up during another

lab section.  Make sure you get the instructors initials

IMPORTANT DATES:

August 21– First Day of Class

September 4 – Labor Day Holiday

October 6 - LAST DAY FOR STUDENT WITHDRAWAL w/o INSTRUCTOR SIGNATURE

November 10-Veteran’s Day Holiday

November 23 to 26- Thanksgiving Holiday

November 27 - LAST DAY FOR STUDENT INITIATED WITHDRAWAL

December 10 - Last Day of Regular Class

ATTENDANCE:  The Maricopa Community College District requires class attendance.  More than three unexcused absences may result in a student being dropped from the course.  Although attendance is required, the instructor is aware that unavoidable situations, such as illness, transportation problems, family emergencies, etc., may arise that require a student to miss a class.  In the event of such an emergency, the student should call one of the phone numbers listed above the same day of the scheduled class, and the absence will not be counted against the student.  If an exam is missed due to an unexcused absence, a make-up test will only be given at the discretion of the instructor.  Make-up exams will only be available for one week following the administration of the original test.

CLASSROOM HONESTY AND INTEGRITY:  Nothing says more about a person than his or her honesty and integrity.  Since students compete with one another for grades and positions in degree and training programs, cheating is considered a serious offense.  Students should consult with the student handbook or the catalog to review the policies and consequences of cheating.  Rather than resort to such tactics, a student should contact the instructor and see if some extra help may resolve any problems in the course.

DISABILITY ACCOMODATION:  If a student requires special accommodations due to a disability, please contact Disability Resource Services at (480) 461-7447.   Be assured that I am willing to make any reasonable accommodations for limitations due to any professionally diagnosed disability, including diagnosed learning disabilities. However, no special accommodations can be provided until a  completed  Instructor Notification Form is received by your instructor from Disability Resource Services. Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to make all necessary arrangements in order for accommodations to be provided.

EXTRA CREDIT: Students may acquire up to a maximum of 20 extra credit points by participating in the departmental Outreach Program.  The Physical Science Department provides science activities for K through 12 students in the area.  This activity will be held several times both on and off campus.  You may acquire 2 points per hour. Typically these events will last approximately three hours.  More information will be available at a later date
